About the Tour

Magnificent Piotrkowska is the heart and soul of Łódź, and one of Europe’s longest commercial thoroughfares. On this walking tour, you’ll discover how a once-rural pathway evolved into an architectural showcase, and hear about the industrial triumph, social upheaval, and cultural revival it witnessed along the way.

The tour starts in Liberty Square. As you meander along Piotrkowska, I’ll share the stories behind its splendid buildings and tell you about the city’s unique trajectory, from tiny village to textile metropolis within a few decades. You’ll explore how four distinct cultures (Polish, German, Russian, and Jewish) shaped Łódź’s identity before 20th century conflicts and economic transformation dramatically changed its character.

As you stroll along this mostly pedestrianized boulevard, you’ll encounter everything from ornate Art Nouveau façades to hidden courtyards and whimsical bronze sculptures. The tour ends in front of the Mural “Łódź“ (one of Europe’s largest), which explains the origins of the city’s mysterious name – which means “boat“ despite having no rivers navigable by boat.

Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Step into the dazzling Pasaż Róży (Rose Passage), a courtyard entirely covered in broken mirrors, created by artist Joanna Rajkowska as a tribute to her daughter’s recovery from cancer
  • Discover the elegant Hotel Grand, where Hollywood stars like Robin Williams and Kirk Douglas have stayed, and where Andrea Bocelli once serenaded crowds from its balcony
  • Admire Gutenberg House, considered Piotrkowska’s most beautiful building, adorned with symbolic sculptures representing the power of the printed word
  • Take in the city’s cinematic legacy on Poland’s version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, commemorating the “HollyŁódź“ film industry that produced directors like Roman Polanski
  • See bronze figures of the city’s industrial titans at an interactive sculpture of Israel Poznanski, Karol Scheibler, and Ludwik Grohman
  • View the world-class Art Nouveau tenements that reflect the city’s prosperity in the early 1900s
  • Learn how the 1905 uprising brought violent confrontation to these elegant streets
  • Discover how Piotrkowska endured the dark years of occupation in both world wars
  • Stand before a giant mural which broke a world record when it was unveiled in 2001

I’ve been captivated by Łódź since my first visit in 2016. On this 90-minute tour, you’ll gain an appreciation of the complex history woven into its architecture, and how this remarkable street continues to reinvent itself.

I am very grateful to the wonderful Grohman Orchestra for giving me permission to use their rendition of 'Prząśniczka' for this tour.

I love creating audio tours of cities which lie close to my heart in the hope that others will share my love and passion.

I wrote my first audio tour of Cardiff, Wales in 2018. I grew up with Cardiff on my doorstep and lived there most of my adult life. Discovering its incredible but still largely unknown history became an ever-growing passion. This led me to develop walking tours and telling people the history, legends and ghost stories of Cardiff and Wales – tales of Kings, Princes, and a one-time tiny town on the Taff that overnight become the world’s biggest coal port, from which emerged the grand domes, towers and columns of its beautiful civic centre….and all the time, in its woodlands and castles lurk ancient legends and tales of ghosts!

I am delighted that, thanks to VoiceMap, I have been able to convert some of these tours into self-guided audio tours.

Since 2019 I have had a new home, Copenhagen, and I have fallen in love with this city. Discovering its history, its character, and its characters past and present, has been an all-consuming pleasure, always full of surprises. In 2021 I was delighted to offer my first Copenhagen audio tour, which was a labour of love to research and develop, as a prelude to more Copenhagen tours following in 2022 and 2023.

In 2023 I was very excited to introduce my first ever audio tour in Poland, of Warsaw’s beautiful Old Town. I have been fascinated and deeply moved by Polish history since childhood, and as an adult I have been spellbound by the beauty of its cities, and awe struck by the resilience and determination of the Polish character despite everything the country has experienced.

In 2025 I published a series of audio tours of Łódź! I hope that my tours of Łódź shed new light on this striking, exciting, and much underrated city! Moreover, I hope that my audiotour of the site of the Łódź Ghetto serves as a powerful informational and educational tool, shedding light on the city's darkest chapter. Indeed, I hope all my Polish audio tours convey my admiration and respect for the country's history and culture.

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    2km
  2. Distance back to start location
    2km

Directions to Starting Point

The tour begins at the very tip of Piotrkowska in an open space with trees and lawns, a fountain and statues called Plac Wolności.

From Łódź Fabryczna station (on foot):

From Lodz Fabryczna station it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the starting point. Leave the station building where you see the large open and slightly sloping terrace (called plac Bronisława Sałacińskiego). Turn right and head to the road which runs alongside it called al. Rodziny Poznańskich. At the road turn left and walk along it with the station behind you and to your left and after about 50 meters you come to a junction.
At the junction, turn right (this street is called płk. Jana Kilińskiego) and follow this road for about 100 meters until you reach another road junction. Turn left at this junction and walk along this street (called prez. Gabriela Narutowicza). Walk along this street for about 500 meters until you come to Piotrkowska. You will recognise it by the tiled flooring and shops and the corner building opposite and to your right has the blue sign “Piekarnia” over the door. Turn right here and walk all the way to the end of the street (about 600 meters) when you come to the starting point at Plac Wolności.

From the hotels such as Novotel, Ibis or Hampton by Hilton:

Make your way to the main tram station (called by locals The Unicorn’s Stable).

You can take trams numbered 2, 3, 6, 7, or 11 which leave from the platform nearest to the Hampton by Hilton. You must have a ticket before you enter and you can buy a ticket from the machine (with English instructions) in the station. Remember to time stamp your ticket as soon as you board by inserting it into the orange or yellow box inside the tram. Take the tram 5 stops (less than 10 minutes journey) and get off at the stop called “Legionów” which you will hear announced in the tram. The tram will be driving due north. Once you are off the tram walk east along the street called Legionów and after about 100 meters you will arrive at Plac Wolności.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to stop and have something to eat or drink on your journey down Piotrkowska. Here are some of my favourites!

By the way, look out for the soup called “Zalewajka”. It is a traditional and very tasty creamy rustic soup which was invented in Łódź in the 1800s!
Among its ingredients are potatoes, sausages, and mushrooms.

Pierogarnia Stary Młyn Łódź, Piotrkowska 37 (Pierogi specialist, traditional Polish dumplings with different fillings)

Imber, Piotrkowska 43 (super food full of flavour with a Jewish-Polish menu, which was the subject of a makeover by iconic Polish TV chef Magda Gessler). I recommend the herring tartare as a starter, but they also serve a lovely Zalewajka, so you might be spoiled for choice!

Manekin, 6 Sierpnia 1 (highly popular Creperie, you might have to queue, because you cannot book, and it is one of the places that the locals love!)

Restauracja Bulgarska, Piotrkowska 69 (Traditional Bulgarian food, tasty, filling, and reasonably priced)

Cafe Grand, Hotel Grand, Piotrkowska 72 (exquisite 5* café with freshly baked pastries, if you wish to splash out and indulge yourself!)

Pijana Wiśnia (it means “Drunk Cherry”), Piotrkowska 85 (specialising in Cherry Vodka, where they might dare you to take a glass filled to the brim!)

Pasibus/Better Burger Piotrkowska 90 (good value and tasty burgers)

Tkalnia, Piotrkowska 97, (the best view of Piotrkowska while you enjoy a coffee, a beer, or a meal in a 2 storey steel-and-glass extension which juts right out into Piotrkowska!)

Bierhalle Esplanada, Piotrkowska 100 (traditional Polish food and beer in a relaxed bar, set in an historic art nouveau building)

Gorąca Pączkarnia F-Wiatrak, Piotrkowska 103-5. (Donut shop. It seems to have become THE place in Łódź to buy traditional Polish donuts!)

Spółdzielnia, Piotrkowska 138-40 (this is located in “Piotrkowska Off”). A broad menu to suit a broad range of tastes. The food is good and you are served in an informal, cosy but quirky “industrial” setting

Ramki, Piotrkowska 144. A very nice friendly and atmospheric restaurant with a range of dishes to suit all tastes. I recommend their tartare dishes. They are exquisite!

Best time of day

The tour can be taken at any time of day and night. The route will be quieter in the morning, and more lively in the afternoon and early evening. The route takes you due south, so be aware that in sunny weather, if you take the tour between 11am and 1pm, you will be facing direct sunlight which may be distracting and uncomfortable.

Precautions

The city centre of Łódź is generally safe, but sensible precautions are recommended, to be aware of pickpockets or undertaking the tour very late at night when the route will be less busy and may leave you feeling vulnerable.

There is very light traffic on Piotrkowska, but it is not traffic free, and there are junctions you need to cross (with light controlled crossings) which have normal traffic. Please always listen to instructions about crossing.

The sidewalks are very well paved and so the most important thing about your footwear is that it is comfortable!

If you are taking the tour on a sunny day in summer, it can get quite hot and the road is exposed to the sun. Your tour direction is due south so in the middle of the day you will be directly facing the sun. Sunglasses, sunblock, and head cover are recommended
