The Best of Leiden: A Walking Tour Through Time
About the Tour
Centuries of art, science, and trade intertwine along Leiden’s ancient canals and cobbled streets.
On this walking tour, you’ll discover how a medieval town transformed into a center of knowledge and culture that shaped global history. This compact university city has layers of fascinating stories at every turn.
The tour begins at the Hartebrugkerk (Heart Bridge Church), a fitting starting point where a wooden bridge has connected the city since the 1300s. You’ll weave through narrow alleys and alongside picturesque canals, exploring the Rijksmuseum Boerhaave where medical science flourished. Along the way, you’ll discover how commerce, religion, and innovation shaped this influential Dutch city.
You’ll climb the ancient Burcht van Leiden, a fortress that’s stood guard over the city for nearly a thousand years. Along quiet canals, you’ll find wall poems painted in dozens of languages and hidden hofjes (courtyard almshouses) that tell stories of charity and community. The tour ends at the ornate Renaissance façade of the Stadhuis (City Hall), which has served as Leiden’s administrative heart for generations.
During this 60-minute walk, you’ll have a chance to:
- Visit Rembrandt’s birthplace on Weddesteeg and discover how this working-class neighborhood shaped his revolutionary artistic vision
- Explore Pieterskerk, where the Pilgrim Fathers worshipped before departing on the Mayflower
- Explore Leiden University, founded in 1575 as a reward for the city’s resistance during the Spanish siege, and where Einstein once taught as a visiting professor
- See the Hortus Botanicus, where tulips were first planted in the Netherlands, sparking the famous tulip mania
- Walk along the prestigious Rapenburg Canal, often called one of Europe’s most beautiful waterways
- Marvel at the Morspoort, one of only two surviving 17th-century city gates
- Visit the former Cloth Hall (Lakenhal) that showcases how textile trade brought wealth to Leiden
- Experience the vibrant Aalmarkt, once the bustling center of the city’s fish trade
By the end of this tour, you’ll understand how this seemingly quiet Dutch city played an outsized role in science, art, and global affairs throughout history.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins in front of Hartebrugkerk, also known as the Heart Bridge Church. It’s easy to spot thanks to its tall neoclassical columns and location on Haarlemmerstraat, one of Leiden’s main shopping streets.
If you're arriving by train, it's about a 10-minute walk from Leiden Centraal Station.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are plenty of great spots to pause and explore along the route. Museum De Lakenhal, Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden are all worth a visit if you have extra time. The Botanical Gardens offer a peaceful place to rest (with free restrooms), and if you’re ready for a drink or bite, try one of the cafés around Beestenmarkt or along Aalmarkt.
Best time of day
This tour can be enjoyed year-round. For the quietest experience, try starting in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially on weekends when the city center can get busy.
Precautions
This is an easy, mostly flat walk, but do wear comfortable shoes—some streets have cobblestones—and keep an eye out for bikes, which can appear quickly and quietly. Bring water, sunscreen in summer, and a light rain jacket or umbrella just in case.
