About the Tour

Discover an abundance of natural beauty and history in the Borrowdale and Buttermere valleys, on a driving tour that loops around the Lake District National Park’s northwest corner.

Our tour starts at the popular and quaint town of Keswick, in the shadow of Skiddaw Mountain. There you’ll learn how pencil making sparked Keswick’s growth. You’ll have the chance to visit picturesque Derwent Water which inspired many scenes in Beatrix Potter’s children’s books. While passing through the spectacular ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’ wooded valley, you’ll discover quaint villages surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. While you drive, I’ll reveal the area’s fascinating history which goes back thousands of years to when Neolithic man made axes in the high fells. I’ll tell you about the success of local graphite mining and its associations with the black market.

Explore two of the most scenic and unspoilt Lake District lakes, Buttermere and Crummock Water, where you can stop for a picnic and a paddle, and hear the shocking tale of the Maid of Buttermere which brought scandal to the sleepy village. You’ll also have a chance to wander down pretty Lorton Vale and up through the scenic mountain forest of Whinlatter with its many activities before heading back to Keswick.

On this tour, you’ll:

  • Find out how the last ice age formed much of what we see today
  • Behold beautiful vistas at Surprise View where you can take a photo of the iconic Ashness Bridge
  • Climb a very large fragment of rock at the Bowder Stone
  • Discover how medieval Vikings and Monks shaped the Borrowdale valley
  • Learn how a local vicar helped form the National Trust and became known as the ‘Defender of the Lakes’
  • Hear about William Wordsworth’s passion for Yew Trees and visit some of his favourites, estimated to be 1,500 years old
  • Marvel at the life and times of the famous local author Alfred Wainwright
  • Hear about a local eccentric who built a fort on Derwent Isle where he tried to reenact medieval battles
  • Experience the exhilarating Honister Pass road and admire the Honister slate mine at the stunning summit

Our tour is around 34 miles (55km) long with magnificent lake and mountain scenery throughout. There are 17 main attractions where you can stop and learn more before deciding if you want to linger longer. Of course, you can also stop anywhere else along the route if you see something you like, it’s your adventure!

Please note: Car park and attraction entry fees are not included in the price of this tour. Refreshments and toilets are available at Keswick and a number of locations throughout the tour. Additional facilities en route are also highlighted.

Tour Producer

Hi. My name is Martin Wilson, I’ve lived in and around the English Lake District for most of my life and I’m passionate about exploring the area, discovering new local places and stories as I go. Over many years I have travelled across every part of the area, always in awe of the magnificent scenery, but also discovering different attractions along the way, many of which give us fascinating insights into local history and culture. I wanted to put my local knowledge to good use so have produced two websites, www.lakedistrictdrives.com which contains 16 fabulous drives, and www.lakedistrictonboard.com which tells you everything you need to know about exploring the area on public transport. They both visit all the best towns, villages, lakes, rivers, valleys and attractions across the Lake District, plus some delightful areas just outside the National Park but still within the county of Cumbria. I hope you can join me in exploring this wonderful area and discovering its stories.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Honister and Whinlatter attractions have restricted opening times which vary throughout the year. Check websites for details of opening and visiting.

Toilet facilities are highlighted but may be subject to closure out of season, overnight or during inclement weather.

Car parks can be busy at peak times, especially at the main towns and villages. The following website is useful for a list of available car parks and their current status. If you find an alternative car park at an attraction, bear in mind you will still need stop at the tour car park to hear the description.

This tour visits a number of National Trust car parks so it may be worth purchasing one of their all day parking tickets which is also valid at all National Trust car parks in the Lake District on that day. The price of a National Trust all day parking ticket is currently £8.50, available from the car park ticket machines.

Best time of day

The Lake District is beautiful any time of year! Spring is relatively quiet with new plant and animal life on show. Summer is the best weather in theory but can be busy. Autumn is relatively quiet with autumn colours on show. Winter can be stunning with snow on the mountains but bad weather can cause difficult driving conditions.

Best time of day is early morning to avoid the crowds and stand a better chance of parking.

Precautions

In wintry or very wet conditions some of the roads may be impassable and it is recommended you don’t attempt the tour.
The tour uses some quite narrow and steep Lake District roads in places where care is needed especially when passing approaching vehicles. The tour is designed for cars and smaller vehicles. Due to some narrow roads it is not recommended to take larger vehicles.

Please note - This tour is intended primarily as a driving tour. There are stops at many attractions along the way but you might only have time to stay longer at a few of them. Many charge for parking which could become expensive if you do stay longer at more attractions. Generally you might only stay for a few minutes, long enough to hear the attraction audio, in which case you would not pay to park.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
