The Finnish Line: A Walking Tour Through the History of Lahti’s Winning Spirit
About the Tour
Sometimes regarded as the Chicago of Finland, Lahti has a long and proud industrial and sporting history. On this walking tour, we’ll explore the city’s park, its sports area and its bay.
Our tour starts next to Kylän Portti, the ”Gate to the Village” monument. From there, you’ll stroll along Church Park to Ristinkirkko Church, or the Church of the Cross as it’s also known. On your way to Fellman Park, you’ll pass the rose-coloured Lahti Manor, now the Lahti Historical Museum, and hear about its owner August Fellman. I’ll share the city’s sporting history with you as you walk past sporting arenas including Isku Areena, Lahti Stadium, and the Lahti Sports Centre. You’ll find out how the city became known as a skiing metropolis, and hear a couple of tales about the FC Lahti football club. As you make your way to the harbour, I’ll tell you about the city’s connection to Russia. The tour ends in front of the Sibelius Hall, an event and concert centre.
On this tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Find out how the old Parish church’s three bells were modernised
- Stroll through Fellman Park, and see the Red Captive Monument
- Learn about Nordic cross-country skier Siiri Rantanen
- View the great sports arenas, where the first ever World Championships for cross-country skiing was held
- Cross over Love Bridge and view Vesijärvi, the lovely city lake
- Take in the spectacular Musical Fountain in the Pikku-Vesijärvi Park
- Hear about city’s first railway and the canal
- Consider partaking in the Lahti Park Run
Join me on this easy-going 75-minute stroll to see the best Lahti has to offer.
Tour Producer
Stormposten Lars Engerengen
In the northern reaches of Europe, amidst the crisp air and breathtaking landscapes, resides an Arctic storyteller whose words weave magic into the frozen silence. Meet Lars Engerengen, a passionate narrator of the Arctic wilderness, a voice that carries the echoes of history and the whispers of untamed nature.
Living beneath the shimmering Northern Lights and the endless glow of the Midnight Sun, Lars discovered his fascination for the Arctic’s lore in childhood. Nights spent listening to age-old tales by the fireside sparked a curiosity that would shape his life’s journey. That spark grew into a flame as he ventured across icy tundras, sailed through fjords, and trekked along snow-laden paths, collecting stories etched into the land and its people.
His storytelling is more than words—it is an immersive experience. With a voice that soothes and inspires, Lars transports listeners to remote landscapes where ancient myths meet modern realities. Through his narratives, one feels the biting wind, hears the crunch of snow underfoot, and senses the resilience of those who carved out life in this harsh yet beautiful region.
Lars doesn't tell you everything, but he tells you enough to pique your curiosity. Enough to make you want to learn more. Enough to make you want to stay a while longer.
Join Lars on a journey beyond the ordinary—a voyage into the soul of the Arctic. Each tale is an invitation to explore a world where nature reigns supreme, and history lingers in every frozen breath. Step into the story, and let the Arctic speak through him.
