The Pearl of Montenegro: A Walking Tour of Kotor’s Old Town
About the Tour
The breathtaking coastline on which Kotor’s Old Town is situated is marked by local peculiarities and millennia of history. On this walking tour, you’ll see Kotor’s key historical sights and learn about unique local traditions, while exploring its maze of alleys and squares.
The tour starts in front of the Sea Gate, one of three entry points into the ancient fortification. As you make your way through medieval alleys and picturesque squares, including the Square of Arms and the Square of Boka Navy where you’ll see the Maritime Museum, I’ll share the town’s rich history with you.
As you explore the town, you’ll come across some squares with unusual names: the Square of Flour, the Square of Milk and even the Square of Salad. I’ll shed light on the town’s unusual naming customs and tell you about the local lifestyle, past and present. You’ll end the tour back on the Square of the Arms.
Along this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Learn about the medieval town that was developing under Venetian French, Austrian-Hungarian, and Yugoslavian rule by visiting the sights from those centuries
- See the impressive Saint Tryphon’s Cathedral and take in the Kampana Tower, which forms part of the town’s fortifications
- Hear why the English poet Lord Byron said that Kotor’s landscapes are second to none
- Climb the Kotor City Walls for a view of the town, Boka Bay, Škurda River, and Lovćen Mountain
- Become familiar with the area’s unique local festivities and the UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Boka Navy traditions
- Find out about Kotor’s reputation for being a cat-friendly town
By the end of this tour, you’ll have a better understanding of the rich history, local lifestyle, and quirky details that make Kotor so unique. You’ll also get recommendations on what to do and see after the tour.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
This tour does not require entering any museums or sites (with entrance fees). However, the sites will be suggested for visiting after the tour. The listener may also pause the audio tour to visit the sites when they are mentioned and explained on the recording, and continue listening upon leaving the site.
If you want to sit down for a while during the tour, it can be pleasant to sit on a bench at Wood square or on one of the benches on the fortifications promenade while you listen to the recordings about those sites.
Best time of day
It is possible to do the tour all year long, every day of the week including holidays because there is no entry to museums or other sites that operate on a schedule. However, you should bear in mind that if you are visiting from May to October, the busier part of the year, the streets might be crowded with people and there might be background noise. My suggestion is to do the tour early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Also, if you are visiting in winter, from November to February, note that it gets dark already by 4 or 5 pm, so make sure you finish the tour before that time. Summer months can be very hot, with scorching sun, and winter days can be rainy and/ or windy.
Precautions
I suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes. The tour is not suited for people who have difficulties climbing or descending steps.
