While walking through the charming Renaissance center of Klagenfurt, I’ll tell you stories about some of the world’s top musicians that left their mark on Carinthia’s capital and its surroundings. I’ll show you where world-famous classical melodies were composed and one of the world’s longest singing careers started. You’ll learn how a Carinthian folk song became well-known in America, and the unlikely connection between one of Austria’s best jazz musicians and the country’s most important pop artist.

Along the way, you’ll see our beautiful Art Nouveau theater, the highest church tower in Klagenfurt, and the Landhaus, where the Carinthian Parliament have been meeting for more than 400 years. We’ll visit two picturesque courtyards hidden between historical buildings, catch a glimpse of the “Golden Goose“, the oldest house in the city, and walk along Austria’s first pedestrian zone.

That's why I love to work as a guide. I've discovered a lot of fascinating information about the people who used to live in Klagenfurt and I am happy to share these stories with you.

In this walk I will introduce you to musicians who came from Klagenfurt or spent a part of their life here. This is the reason why you are standing in front of the municipal theater right now. The lady I would like to talk about first, is known as the "Queen of Operetta". She was born in Graz in the 19th century as a daughter of two Russian court actors, but her name is German - Marie Geistinger. She spent many years abroad acting and singing on the stages of Berlin, Hamburg and Riga before she was invited back to Austria by the director of Vienna´s Theater an der Wien. He offered her the title role in Jacques Offenbach's operetta La Belle Hélène. Offenbach himself commented later on, that he had never seen a better performance of the role and that she was the greatest operetta performer he had seen. After this success, she continued in other leading roles in Offenbach´s operettas. Marie Geistinger was also responsible for the success of Strauss's Viennese operettas. She was starring in the premières of Indigo und die vierzig Räuber (1871), Der Karneval in Rom (1873), Die Fledermaus (1874, in the role of Rosalinda), and Cagliostro in Wien (1875).

Next to acting and singing - she also joined the director of the Theater an der Wien and was co-managing this cultural institution. She moved to New York, to the Thalia Theater and after having the same success performed on stages across the United States. The later years of her life, Marie spent in Klagenfurt. She lived in a villa at the Lendkanal until she died on 29 September 1903. Today, there is a memorial remembering her as the most important operetta singer of her times. She is buried in a tomb of honour in Vienna's Central Cemetery. Her villa in Klagenfurt is used by Walddorf nursery school.

Directions to Starting Point

The start of the tour is in front of the municipal theater, Theaterplatz 4, 9020 Klagenfurt.

If you travel by car, you can park in the Theatergarage (Purtscherstraße 1A) or BKS Ring Garage (St. Veiter Ring 43). You can also leave your car in the large car park at the Lake Wörthersee in front of the public bath free of charge and take a bus No. 10 to the central bus station on Heiligengeistplatz.

If you travel by bus, you need to get off the bus at the central bus station - Heiligengeistplatz. From here you have to walk along the Ursulinengasse about 400 meters to the theater. It takes about 5 minutes.

When travelling by train, take a bus to the central bus station on Heiligengeistplatz, too.

Places to stop along the way

Best time of day

You can do this tour at anytime in any season. The only place, which could be closed later in the evening or very early in the morning, is the Ossiacher Hof. It is usually open between 9 am and 6 pm. Precautions

Klagenfurt is a safe place. Although you will walk mostly in the pedestrian zone, be aware of bikes and pay attention while crossing the roads. This route is wheelchair and pushchair friendly.
