The Legends of Key West: A Tour with the Magical and Comedic Frank Everhart
About the Tour
Key West’s quirky island lifestyle has attracted larger-than-life characters, including author Ernest Hemingway, singer Jimmy Buffet, and treasure hunter Mel Fisher. On this walking tour, you’ll hear about the legendary people the island has attracted over the years and see where they made history.
Your guide is none other than Frank Everhart, the Schooner Wharf Bar’s very own comedic magician, whose tales are as captivating as the history they’re woven from.
Frank, with his intimate knowledge and personal anecdotes, will show you the museums, bars and often-overlooked corners where treasure hunters, eccentrics, and unforgettable locals left their mark. You’ll even see Jimmy Buffet’s first home and his Key West recording studio, Shrimpboat Sound Studio.
Starting outside Opal Key Resort & Marina, you’ll stroll along dusty lanes filled with local history and end this tour on the other side of the harbor in front of Schooner Wharf Bar.
On this Key West tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Visit some of Key West’s most famous bars and a few lesser-known ones, like Shots & Giggles and Joe’s Tap Room
- Marvel at the legendary Sloppy Joe’s Bar, where the spirits of Hemingway and his contemporaries linger over every story told
- Toast to the seafaring souls at Schooner Wharf Bar, and maybe even get the chance to enjoy a magic show by Frank himself at the end of the tour
- Wander past Old City Hall, hearing the eclectic history of the infamous Conch Republic, as the city is affectionately known
- Learn about the Spanish Galleon Atocha at the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, delving into tales of treasure that have captivated adventure seekers for generations
- Share a moment at the famous Capt Tony’s Saloon, a place of lore, luck, and legacies
- Sip on a cocktail at Chart Room Cocktail Lounge, a secret bar hidden in plain sight and frequented by locals
- Wander Lazy Way Lane, a picturesque pathway that captures the essence of Key West’s laid-back lifestyle and artistic flair
This tour offers you not just memories but a new chapter in your life, one where you’re no longer a spectator but a part of Key West’s ongoing, bohemian story. So as you leave the island enriched by the magic of Frank and the vibrant spirit of Key West, remember: you’re taking home more than just stories; you’re carrying a piece of Key West in your heart.
Get ready to step into those local sandals and leave your own mark on this legendary island.

Island Audio Tours
My name is Josh Koerpel, and I started Island Audio Tours in 2023 as my goal was to 'reinvent' the concept of the traditional audio tour.
There are so many interesting people and places in Key West, 1000 tours wouldn't cover them all.
But I'm going to try!

Tips
Places to stop along the way
Remember, you bought it. This is now your tour. 😁 So make it as fun and extravagant as you want it to be!
Here’s some “don’t miss" ideas along the way.
★ Mel Fisher's maritime heritage museum at 200 Greene st.
★ The Audubon House at 205 Whitehead Street
★ Captain Tony’s Saloon at 428 Greene Street
★ Local Jewelry store on Greene Street, located right across the street from the old Paladin Magic shop (next to Captain Tony’s Saloon.) For the ladies, or the men shopping for the ladies, this local jewelry store is a gem. All pun intended there. The store has been here for the 25+ years I’ve been here delighting customers with a bit of local culture to take home.
★ Sloppy Joe’s Bar at 201 Duval Street. Where you will want to get more stories from the bartenders about the exploits of Ernest Hemingway and Sloppy Joe Russel.
★ El Meson de Pepe’s at 410 Wall Street. Great Cuban food and a Cuban Heritage museum inside the restaurant.
★ Mallory Square at 400 Wall Street. Here you will find all the street performers that do the sunset celebration every night in Key West including World renowned Street Magician, Gazzo, who has been there 41 years!
★ The Chartroom Bar at 1 Duval Street (What a great address!,😀🌴) Ask the bartenders what Jimmy got paid to play there. Also,Mel Fisher used to sit at table 5 and try to get people to invest in his dream of finding treasure. The only room for, and only were 2 tables in the room. Explain that one!
★ Shots and Giggles at 201 Ann Street. They have a famous Frank there too. This one’s a ghost!
★ Jimmy Buffett’s “Shrimpboat Sound “ Studio. This is where most of the magic happened for the recordings.
★ Schooner Wharf Bar at 202 William Street. Happy hour starts at 8 am with The Breakfast Club. There’s live music all day and night and in to the evening and night you have Frank Everhart’s Comedy 🎭 Magic Bar! Check out the end of the bar by the jukebox. It’s inlaid with gold, silver and a pictorial history of Mel Fisher from the years he frequented his favorite bar on the island! 🏝️
