About the Tour

In this walking tour of the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy, you'll learn about this state of the art facility. From why it's here and who it serves to why it's striving to make a huge impact on the surrounding communities. You will be able to walk on our Major League Baseball sized infield, which is located in our indoor facility. You will also get to experience a one of a kind player mural that is located in our lobby. Most of all, you will be able to experience four fields, two of which are the same dimensions as Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals. Come learn about the passionate donors and different programs that the UYA has to offer. Go Royals!

As an Academy, we are committed to providing a positive environment for our area youth. We will educate our players on what it means to be a "professional" while surrounding them with coaches, mentors, and role models who can teach them how to play the games of baseball and softball and serve as examples of good citizenship.

Through our athletic-focused training, education, and character development programs, we will build a strong foundation for Academy student-athletes, based on work ethic, leadership, responsibility, accountability, and moral principles. This foundation will allow Academy student-athletes to acquire that unwavering strength of purpose that is the keynote of all individual success.

As you start this tour, you will learn about the great individuals and foundations that made this dream a reality. The UYA, as many refer to it, is an entity of the Kansas City Royals. Its mission is empowering Kansas City's youth through baseball and softball, as well as academic and social opportunities, to be the leaders of tomorrow.

If you take a look at the mural on the building in front of you, you'll see a design that represents where baseball in Kansas City used to be. Starting with the Kansas City Monarchs at Municipal stadium and as time went on transitioning to the present-day Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. You can also see the significance of the youth that are present in the mural as well. All the elements of this mural are why the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy is here.

With the idea of serving children 6-18, we serve a variety of ethnicities and backgrounds. 43% of our children are African American, 40% are caucasian, 15% are hispanic, 1% are Native American, and 1% are Asian. In total, since we opened our doors, we have served close to 35 thousand children with 70% of them being boys, and 30% being girls.

This facility was designed by Populous, a global design firm with colleagues spanning four continents. Working with communities of all sizes and using a range of disciplines, Populous create experiences that amplify the joy felt in shared human moments. The actual construction of the facility was done by Kansas City based general contractor J.E Dunn. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred in 2016 followed by the grand opening in April 2018. None of this would’ve been possible without the generosity of the many donors you will hear about throughout this tour. As you move around this facility on the tour, we also believe it is important to mention that before the UYA was built, this area known as Parade Park. It was a staple in the community for all walks of life to enjoy the outdoors and sports.
