Intriguing Imatra: Where the River Roars
About the Tour
Imatra has a fascinating blend of dramatic natural landscapes, compelling industrial history, and cross-cultural connections.
On this waterside walking tour, you’ll discover how the powerful Vuoksi River has shaped the development of Finland’s unique southeastern border city.
The tour starts at the impressive Art Nouveau Imatran Valtionhotelli, built in 1903 to resemble a medieval knight’s castle. You’ll explore the Crown Park, Finland’s oldest nature reserve established in 1842 by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. As you walk along scenic riverside paths with viewpoints where Russian aristocrats and even Empress Catherine the Great once stood in admiration of the roaring rapids, you’ll learn about Imatra’s strategic location at the crossroads of Swedish and Russian influences.
You’ll also find out how the harnessing of the Vuoksi River’s power transformed Imatra from a small village into an industrial powerhouse, with steel mills and paper factories that continue to drive the local economy. The tour ends at Villa Malmi on the east bank of the Vuoksi River, providing a perfect vantage point to reflect on Imatra’s unique position as a border town just seven kilometers from Russia.
During this 45-minute tour, you’ll:
- Walk through Kruununpuisto Park, seeing the same landscapes that inspired composers Jean Sibelius and Igor Stravinsky
- Learn about the flying squirrels that inhabit the mature forest, a rare species in Nordic countries
- Visit the Pikku-Impi sculpture, a poignant monument to those who lost their lives in the rapids
- Discover how the Vuoksi River connects Finland’s largest lake to Europe’s largest lake, and how this border region has been inhabited since the Stone Age
- Witness the powerful Imatrankoski dam and learn about its historical water releases
- Explore the city center with its cafés and pedestrian zones
- Pass by industrial heritage sites that tell the story of Finland’s economic transformation
This tour offers a perfect introduction to Imatra’s blend of natural beauty, industrial heritage, and border town character – all within a relaxing 45-minute stroll.

Stormposten Lars Engerengen
In the northern reaches of Europe, amidst the crisp air and breathtaking landscapes, resides an Arctic storyteller whose words weave magic into the frozen silence. Meet Lars Engerengen, a passionate narrator of the Arctic wilderness, a voice that carries the echoes of history and the whispers of untamed nature.
Living beneath the shimmering Northern Lights and the endless glow of the Midnight Sun, Lars discovered his fascination for the Arctic’s lore in childhood. Nights spent listening to age-old tales by the fireside sparked a curiosity that would shape his life’s journey. That spark grew into a flame as he ventured across icy tundras, sailed through fjords, and trekked along snow-laden paths, collecting stories etched into the land and its people.
His storytelling is more than words—it is an immersive experience. With a voice that soothes and inspires, Lars transports listeners to remote landscapes where ancient myths meet modern realities. Through his narratives, one feels the biting wind, hears the crunch of snow underfoot, and senses the resilience of those who carved out life in this harsh yet beautiful region.
Lars doesn't tell you everything, but he tells you enough to pique your curiosity. Enough to make you want to learn more. Enough to make you want to stay a while longer.
Join Lars on a journey beyond the ordinary—a voyage into the soul of the Arctic. Each tale is an invitation to explore a world where nature reigns supreme, and history lingers in every frozen breath. Step into the story, and let the Arctic speak through him.
