Ilfracombe Harbour Ghost Tour
About the Tour
Ilfracombe is North Devon’s most haunted harbour, with historical horrors around every corner.
On this walking tour, you’ll explore a coastal town where tragedy and the supernatural have intertwined for centuries, and uncover some of its chilling secrets. You’ll make your way through narrow lanes and historic quaysides with plenty of documented hauntings, and see Ilfracombe’s shadowy past.
The tour starts at Fore Street and ends at the foot of the Verity statue. Along the way, you’ll discover how Ilfracombe’s maritime history created the perfect conditions for restless spirits. I’ll tell you about the mysterious wreck of The London in 1796, whose dead still walk the shoreline at Rapparee Cove. You’ll also hear stories about the victims of other tragic accidents, as darkness fell over the Bristol Channel.
The tour blends meticulously researched local history with spine-tingling accounts of recent paranormal encounters, creating an experience that will linger in your memory long after the final tale is told.
This isn’t just a tour about ghost stories – it’s about understanding how Ilfracombe’s past as a smugglers’ haven, fishing port, and shipwreck site created a town where the veil between worlds remains remarkably thin. Historical photographs at each location help you visualise these spaces as they once were, when the figures who now haunt them still lived and breathed.
On this 75-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Visit the George & Dragon, Ilfracombe’s oldest pub dating to 1360, where multiple spirits include Celia, Molly, and a spectral terrier dog that brushes against visitors’ legs
- Hear the heartbreaking story of young Ella, whose burning ghost is still seen racing through Rodney Lane after her dress caught fire in 1900
- Discover the Royal Britannia Hotel, home to several active spirits including the ghost of young Thomas Hall, thrown to his death from a spooked horse
- Learn about George, whose daily ritual at the harbour was interrupted by a fatal epileptic seizure in 1920
- Explore the Quay where Elizabeth was crushed by falling cargo in 1870, her spirit now haunting the nearby Brewery Tap and Grill
- Hear the tragic tale of the lighthouse keeper who was cut in two while trying to save others, now seen as a hovering light near the flagpole on stormy nights
- Visit St. Nicholas Chapel, the UK’s oldest working lighthouse, where centuries of prayers for safe passage echo through the stone walls
Join this unforgettable journey through Ilfracombe’s haunted harbour – but remember, as you walk these historic streets, you’re never truly alone.
Tour Producer
Mark Langworthy
I’m the founder of Devon History Tours, and if there’s one thing I love, it’s bringing the past to life right where it happened. Whether I’m guiding individuals or groups, my aim is always the same: to turn streets, buildings, and hidden corners into vivid stories packed with history, tradition, and the odd surprise.
Being a guide means staying sharp. I pride myself on quick wit, vibrant vocabulary, and having accurate answers ready for everything from curious questions to the wonderfully unexpected ones. A good tour should educate, entertain, and leave people smiling and yes, that means plenty of well-timed humour along the way. It can be draining work, but it’s also hugely rewarding, and the testimonials from guests say it all.
I also love creating self-guided tours, carefully designed to give people the freedom to explore at their own pace while uncovering the hidden stories, forgotten details, and fascinating history that often go unnoticed.
If you enjoy history served with personality, insight, and a spark of fun, you’re in the right place.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you are in the mood for a drink then I would recommend the George & Dragon this is the first stop on the tour and is the oldest and most haunted pub in the town why not listen about the ghosts that haunt there over a drink maybe you might get to meet one whilst you are there. If it is food you are after I recommend the restaurant called the Smugglers which is situated along the route on the harbour.
Best time of day
This tour can be done at anytime of the day but to get the full immersive experience try it at dusk or better still during the hours of darkness when all is still and quiet.
Precautions
the route is designed to be fully accessible and is easy going with pavement all along the route. The terrain is flat and there is seating along the route should you need to rest. 95% there is shelter from the elements however when you get out onto the harbour you will be in the open and it can get cold out there so please do take adequate clothing to keep you warm and dry.
Should the weather turn for the worst there are places close by to seek shelter ranging from Pubs, Cafes and Restaurant. There is a public toilet also on the harbour situated across from the quay.
