The Haunted Village Behind the Novels: A Haworth Ghost Tour
About the Tour
Haworth's history runs much darker than its cobbled streets and literary fame suggest. On this walking tour, you'll hear the ghost stories, folklore, and grim social history that lurk beneath this West Yorkshire village's picture-postcard surface. You'll also discover how poverty, disease, and tragedy shaped the lives – and afterlives – of its most famous inhabitants.
The tour starts outside Haworth Old Hall, a building that has served as a private residence, courtroom, and funeral parlour since 1621, where a stern, top-hatted apparition is said to stalk the corridors to this day. From there, you'll head up the cobbled Main Street, past The Fleece Inn, where a shapeless black mass haunts the guest rooms, and a child in Victorian dress vanishes before startled drinkers. You'll hear how the Industrial Revolution transformed Haworth from a quiet farming village into an overcrowded mill town, where life expectancy hovered at just 24 years.
You'll learn about the tragic death of young mill labourer John William Place, whose agonised screams are still reportedly heard echoing around the village square at night. Further along, you'll hear the stories behind The Old White Lion and The King's Arms – a pub that doubled as courtroom, slaughterhouse, and mortuary. The tour ends on the moorland above the village, where local folklore warns of the Barghest, a demonic black dog said to appear only to those about to lose a loved one.
On this 45-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Explore the haunted rooms of The Black Bull, where Branwell Brontë drank away his failed literary ambitions
- Learn how Haworth's overcrowded graveyard contaminated the village's water supply for decades
- Hear how parachutist Lily Cove met her tragic end at the 1906 Haworth Summer Gala
- Visit the Brontë Parsonage, where poltergeist activity and the ghost of Emily Brontë are regularly reported
- Discover the Yorkshire folklore of Boggarts – mischievous spirits that terrorised farming families
- Hear the strange tale of Captain William Batt, whose ghost returned to Oakwell Hall on the night of his death
Pull on your walking shoes and prepare for Haworth's darker side.
