From Harbour to High Culture: A Guide to Hamburg's Port and Elbphilharmonie
About the Tour
Hamburg is a city born from its bustling maritime trade. On this walking tour from Hamburg Harbour to the iconic Elbphilharmonie, you’ll explore its unique quaysides and soaring architecture, and find out how the city developed into a cosmopolitan centre of culture.
The tour starts at the heart of the harbour, where you’ll see a variety of ships docking and departing from the landing bridge, or Landungsbrücken. You’ll then descend into the depths of the Old Elbe Tunnel, which helped to facilitate trade and commerce in the region.
But the true jewel of the harbour awaits you at the end of the tour: the magnificent Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, a landmark concert venue. We’ll hear about the concert hall’s unique design journey and learn to appreciate Hamburg’s love affair with arts and culture.
On this 75-minute tour, you’ll hear all about the city’s beginnings as a trading port. You’ll also have a chance to:
- Explore Feuerschiff LV 13, a historic lightship and a symbol of Hamburg’s maritime heritage
- Stroll along the Jan Fedder Promenade, named after the beloved actor and Hamburg native
- Stop at the Harbor Police Station No. 2 and hear the fascinating story of Speicherstadt, a former duty-free harbour area that was separated from the taxed inner-city
- Step aboard the Rickmer Rickmers, a storied ‘museum ship’ with a treasure trove of history
- Hear about Hamburg’s maritime industry’s turbulent history at the Cap San Diego, the world’s largest sailable museum ship
- Feel the pulse of the city at one of Europe’s busiest and most historic harbours
Whether you’re drawn to history, architecture, or simply the thrill of adventure, prepare for an unforgettable journey through one of Europe’s most dynamic port cities.
