Getting to Know the Görlitz Old Town
About the Tour
Görlitz has more protected historical monuments than Berlin – around 4,000 of them – yet far fewer tourists. On this walking tour, you'll explore a city so remarkably intact that filmmakers use its streets as stand-ins for early 20th-century Paris and Berlin. You'll also discover the layered stories behind medieval towers, Gothic churches, and merchant halls that have survived fires, wars, and decades of communist neglect.
The tour starts at the Art Nouveau Kaufhaus, the department store whose grand lobby doubled as the fictional Grand Budapest Hotel in Wes Anderson's 2014 film. From there, you'll walk along Steinstraße, past buildings once owned by Görlitz's Jewish community before the Nazi boycotts, and into the Untermarkt, the city's historic lower market square. You'll duck into Verrätergasse – Traitor's Alley – to hear how a clockmaker's trick led to the execution of rebellious cloth merchants in 1527. Their church bells still ring seven minutes early today.
The tour continues past the Altes Rathaus, where a blindfold-free Lady Justice hints at her medieval origins, and along Neißstraße to the Biblical House, its sandstone façade carved with scenes from both Testaments. You'll pass the Nikolaiturm, one of four surviving medieval watchtowers, before reaching the Peter and Paul Church, whose twin towers have defined the city's skyline since 1890. The tour ends on the Old Town Bridge over the Neisse River, where you can walk from Germany into Poland without a border check.
On this 60-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Hear how Görlitz earned the nickname
Görliwood,
attracting directors including Quentin Tarantino and Kate Winslet - Explore the Dreifaltigkeitskirche, a Franciscan monastery church with a chilling legend about a murderous monk
- Discover the Whispering Arch at Untermarkt 22, a Gothic portal with a remarkable acoustic trick
- Learn about the anonymous donor who gave the city 1 million Deutschmarks every year for 21 years
- Visit the Barockhaus, home to a library so photogenic it regularly appears on Instagram
- Find out how the medieval Lusatian League alliance kept peace across six cities
Few cities in Central Europe have survived this intact – and fewer still have this many stories to tell.
