Gold, Beer, and the Rockies: A Walking Tour Through Golden’s Past
About the Tour
Golden is where frontier dreams, engineering innovation, and brewing history converge in Colorado’s scenic foothills.
On this walking tour, you’ll hear about the town’s gold rush beginnings, and how it became home to a world-renowned engineering university. You’ll also find out the story behind the iconic Coors Brewery complex – the largest single-site brewery in the world.
The tour starts at the Golden Welcome Center near Clear Creek, where gold prospectors first retrieved fine gold flakes in 1859. You’ll walk along Washington Avenue under the iconic “Welcome to Golden” arch, and explore the Golden History Park with its authentic pioneer-era buildings that were relocated from a nearby ranch.
Along the way, you’ll discover how Golden briefly served as the territorial capital, and see the Colorado School of Mines campus with its famous “M” on the mountainside. The tour ends along the peaceful Clear Creek Trail, where kayakers and nature lovers now enjoy the same waters that once drove the town’s economy.
On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Learn how a German immigrant named Adolph Coors chose Golden not for its gold – but for its pure water, perfect for brewing
- Visit the Foothills Art Center, housed in an 1872 Presbyterian church that symbolizes Golden’s creative evolution
- Walk through neighborhoods of lovingly preserved Victorian and Craftsman homes, many built with bricks salvaged from downtown fires
- Discover how Coors survived Prohibition by pivoting to ceramics and malted milk before evolving into a brewing giant and high-tech materials company
- View architectural details that reveal Golden’s resilience through booms and busts, from mining camp to modern town
- See the historic Astor House, a temperance-supporting boarding house that operated for over a century
This walk through Golden reveals a town that has preserved its frontier spirit while embracing innovation, creativity, and the stunning natural landscape that surrounds it.

Precautions
Most of the route is on paved paths, but you’ll encounter some light gravel and inclines, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Sunblock and a hat are smart in Colorado’s dry, sunny climate—and in winter, watch for icy spots and walk with care. Also be sure to watch for bikes!
