Monks, Martyrs, and Phantoms: A Glastonbury Ghost Tour
About the Tour
Glastonbury is where the veil between worlds grows thin. On this atmospheric walking tour, you’ll discover why this small Somerset town has earned its reputation as one of Britain’s most haunted places – where history, legend, and the supernatural converge like nowhere else in England.
The tour begins at St. Dunstan’s car park. You’ll catch a glimpse of the majestic ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, once England’s wealthiest monastery, now home to ghostly monks who continue their sacred duties centuries after death.
Along the way, you’ll learn how Glastonbury’s sacred geography has shaped its supernatural reputation, from the terraced slopes of the mysterious Tor – said to be a gateway to the Celtic Otherworld – to ancient Dod Lane, once known as ‘Dead Man’s Lane.’ The tour ends at St. Margaret’s Chapel, where the heartbroken spirit of a mother separated from her child still wanders the upper rooms.
On this 45-minute walking tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Hear stories about the haunted George and Pilgrims Hotel, a 15th-century inn where harp music plays in empty rooms and a monk’s laughter echoes through the walls
- Discover the grim history of Glastonbury Tor, where the town’s last abbot was brutally executed and St. Collen is said to have confronted the fairy king Gwyn ap Nudd
- Visit former crossroads burial sites where suicide victims were interred with stakes to prevent their spirits from wandering
- Hear the tragic tale of church warden John Bulleid, whose financial ruin led him to leap from the tower at St John the Baptist’s Church
- See the ancient Holy Thorn tree, said to have sprung from Joseph of Arimathea’s staff, which still flowers miraculously at Christmas
- Walk in the footsteps of monks and pilgrims along ancient pathways that some believe channel spiritual energy
- Visit a former nightclub where staff reported objects flying across rooms and ghostly music playing when the building was empty
This tour offers a spine-tingling journey through Glastonbury’s supernatural landscape. Whether you’re a believer in the paranormal or simply fascinated by local folklore, you’ll never see this mystical town the same way again.
