Galway Walking Tour: A Guide to the Dark Heart of the City's Medieval Centre
About the Tour
Vibrant and bustling Galway is known for its festivals, quirky pubs, and street performers, but only those in-the-know can spot the tell-tale signs of its medieval past. On this walking tour, I’ll point out remnants of this historical city and reveal some of its darker tales of death, murders, and executions.
Starting in front of the Browne Doorway in Eyre Square, you’ll walk through Galway’s main shopping district to our first stop, the King’s Head Bistro and Pub. There, I’ll share the gory details of King Charles I of England’s execution and what the event has to do with the pub’s name. You’ll then wind your way into the heart of the Latin Quarter to the Spanish Arch, to find out how millions of Irish were affected by An Gorta Mór (or, the Great Hunger) of 1846.
On this dark tour you’ll also have the opportunity to:
- See the Lynch’s Memorial Window where a father hung his own son in the 1400s
- Learn about the murder of the Joyce family in Maamtrasna in 1882
- Listen to the story of Alice Burns, a young Galwegian woman murdered in a crime of passion in 1884
- Gaze up at the Galway Cathedral where three men were hanged in December 1882
- Stand in the shadow of the gallows near Eyre Square where many people were hanged
- Stroll down some of the city’s main thoroughfares including Shop Street, High Street and Woodquay
- Find out why young John Bodkin murdered his family
This 60-minute tour winds up at the Liam Mellows Statue, a stone’s throw from where the tour began. Along the way, I’ll provide plenty of recommendations for pubs, restaurants, and gift shops for you to visit. You might want to allow more time to stop off for a drink in one of the city’s pubs, to listen to the many amazing street performers, or to visit the city’s attractions.
I’m very much looking forward to sharing Galway’s dark and murky past with you!

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins at the Browne Doorway in Eyre Square. If you're in the middle of Eyre Square you'll see some steps in the north of the square. Walk up the steps and you'll see a free standing stone doorway with perspex glass surrounding it for protection. During the summer you'll see flagpoles near the doorway with flags flying overhead with the names of the 14 Tribes on them. This is the Browne Doorway.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
When you're at the Spanish Parade pay a visit to Galway City Museum. Walk through the Spanish Arch and the museum is on the left-hand side. Learn about Galway's history and marine life through three floors. The best thing it's free! Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm.
While you're walking to Lynch's Memorial Window you'll be passing by St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church. This church is the oldest medieval parish church in Ireland that's still in continuous use as a place of worship and has been at the heart of Galway city for over 700 years. There is a small charge to do a self-guided tour of the church, but the money goes towards the maintenance of the building.
If you want to relax and listen to some traditional Irish music visit Taaffe's Bar on Shop Street or Tigh Chóilí's on Mainguard Street. Both pubs are cosy and hold two music sessions daily. Taaffe's music sessions are on 5.30pm and 9.30pm and Tigh Chóilí's is around 6pm and 9pm. Be sure to arrive early to get a good seat.
Best time of day
This tour can be done all year round but the best time is the month of October and coming up to Halloween. If you do the tour around the end of July or the beginning of August, crowds are busy because of Galway International Arts Festival and the Galway Races. Crowds are also busy around November and December with the Christmas Market in Eyre Square.
Precautions
Galway is a safe city but as with anywhere please be aware of your surroundings. Bring an umbrella with you as the weather is changable and wear comfortable shoes.
