Eindhoven Highlights: A Walk Through The City’s Story
About the Tour
Eindhoven’s story is one of constant reinvention.
On this walking tour, you’ll find out how this small medieval settlement transformed into a technological powerhouse where Philips and the compact disk (CD) were born. You’ll also explore the city’s stunning modern architecture and vibrant cultural spaces.
Starting at Philips Stadium, you’ll walk through the heart of a city that received its rights in 1232 but was completely transformed by the arrival of the Philips lightbulb factory in 1891. You’ll pass iconic landmarks like the Lichttoren (Light Tower) and stroll through 18 Septemberplein. Along the way, you’ll find out how Eindhoven’s post-war reconstruction created one of the Netherlands’ most forward-thinking urban landscapes.
You’ll hear stories behind its architectural highlights, and learn how institutions like Muziekgebouw Frits Philips keep the city’s creative spirit alive. The tour ends at Stratumseind, the Netherlands’ longest pub street, where you can relax and reflect on Eindhoven’s remarkable journey from industrial powerhouse to design capital.
During this 60-minute tour you’ll also have a chance to:
- Explore the Light Tower (Lichttoren), the iconic former Philips factory where the company once tested their revolutionary light bulbs
- Visit 18 Septemberplein, named after Eindhoven’s liberation day during World War II, and learn about the city’s remarkable post-war reconstruction
- Discover De Blob, the futuristic glass and steel structure that exemplifies Eindhoven’s bold approach to modern urban design
- Learn about Eindhoven’s pivotal role in music history as the birthplace of both the compact cassette and the CD
- Stop at St. Catherine’s Church, designed by Pierre Cuypers, the same architect behind Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum
- Visit the Van Abbemuseum, one of Europe’s first public museums dedicated to modern and contemporary art
- Reflect at Anne Frank Park, a memorial space honoring Holocaust victims from Eindhoven
By the end of this tour, you’ll have a better understanding of this city that never stops reinventing itself, from wartime scars to its future-facing innovation.

Directions to Starting Point
This tour begins at the Philips Stadion, the home of PSV Eindhoven. You’ll find it just west of the city centre — easily reachable by foot, bike, or public transport.
If you're coming from Eindhoven Central Station, it's a 15–20 minute walk. Just follow the signs toward Philips Stadion or use the navigation button in the app to open Google or Apple Maps. Several city buses also stop nearby — look for the Stadionplein stop.
To make sure you’re in the right place, look for the large PSV Eindhoven signage on the facade and the red, white, and black flags waving near the stadium entrance. The tour will begin just outside the main entrance. You’ll see a large plaza and a photo in the app to match the spot.
