Edinburgh’s cobbled streets hide a darker past - one shaped by notorious crimes, brutal punishments, and pioneering policing. On this immersive audio tour, you’ll uncover the city’s shadowy history through real murder cases, infamous criminals, and the evolution of Scottish law enforcement - all guided by a former Detective Sergeant with 27 years of frontline experience.

Starting at the junction of Cockburn Street and the Royal Mile, you’ll journey through the heart of the Old Town, discovering how Edinburgh’s policing evolved from the corrupt, musket-wielding Town Guard of the 1700s into a professional force that would influence policing across Scotland. Along the way, you’ll visit striking historic locations, each with its own story.

View the locations of the once feared Calton Jail, the Canongate Tolbooth where prisoners awaited their fate, and pass the Heart of Midlothian mosaic, marking the previous entrance to the city’s most notorious prison. Learn about the Scottish courts of law and from there, venture into the eerie Greyfriars Kirkyard - once stalked by grave robbers supplying bodies to anatomy schools—and continue to the Grassmarket, where public executions once drew huge crowds. You’ll hear the story of William “Deacon” Brodie - respected tradesman by day, burglar by night - whose double life inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The tour concludes on the Castle Esplanade, a place once used for military executions and witch burnings, offering sweeping views across the city.

During this 150-minute tour, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Hear how the 1977 World’s End Murders were finally solved 37 years later using DNA evidence
  • Discover how Burke and Hare killed 16 victims to supply Edinburgh’s anatomy schools
  • Visit Bakehouse Close—featured in Outlander—with views of Arthur’s Seat, linked to a recent murder case
  • Stand at the site of Queen Elizabeth II’s body after her death and discover the extraordinary policing operation behind the event.
  • Learn how “Half-Hangit Maggie” miraculously survived her execution in 1724
  • Find out how a crucial piece of CCTV footage—almost erased—helped solve a modern day murder
  • Explore the famous Greyfriars Kirkyard, including the graves of Greyfriars Bobby and John Gray
  • Put your memory and policing skills to the test with fun interactive challenges along the way

This tour brings Edinburgh's criminal history to life through the eyes of someone who lived it. Lace up your shoes and prepare for a walk you won't forget.

Tour Producer

With 27 years of service in policing, I am a retired Detective Sergeant with extensive frontline and investigative experience, gained during my time with Lothian and Borders Police and Police Scotland. Much of my career was spent working on the streets of Edinburgh, where I was directly involved in a wide range of major investigations, including murder inquiries and serious, complex crimes.

As a detective in the Criminal Investigation Department, I built a strong foundation in investigative work, later moving into roles focused on organised crime and counter-terrorism. My experience includes tackling serious and organised criminal networks, particularly those linked to drug offences. I also worked within the covert side of policing as a surveillance officer and investigator, giving me a rare insight into the hidden operations that take place beyond public view.

Alongside my policing career, I contributed as a police advisor to the Netflix crime drama Department Q, helping to create realistic police radio communications. I have developed a deep interest in the history of Edinburgh and the evolution of policing in the city, and I now bring these experiences together to offer a compelling, authentic perspective on crime, investigation, and the real stories that have shaped Edinburgh’s past and present.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

There are so many cafes, pubs and restaurants lined along the route of this tour.

I would highly recommend the famous baked potato shop called, Tempting Tattie that is near the start of the tour on Jeffrey Street.

The Tolbooth Tavern that is steeped in history serves fantastic food and is located near the bottom of The Royal Mile.

For any Harry Potter fans, you will pass The Elephant House Cafe at 21 George IV Bridge later on the tour. You can grab a drink or a bite to eat and see the location where JK Rowling began to write her Harry Potter novels.

Best time of day

The best time to do this tour would be during daylight hours but it can still be taken when it is dark. During the summer months it gets light very early in the morning until late at night. Temperatures can often be warm during the summer months but can drop in the evening where warm clothing would be advisable.
During the winter, days can be very short with darkness falling around 3.30pm on the shortest day. Edinburgh winters are often very cold and I would recommend wearing warm and waterproof clothing from September to May.

Edinburgh is a very popular tourist destination, especially around The Royal Mile. Pavements and popular attractions can become congested with pedestrians during the summer months.
This tour involves many steps along with steep inclines and declines.

Precautions

Edinburgh is a relatively safe city with a low crime rate, especially around The Royal Mile. Always take precautions if carrying valuables, especially in congested areas. As Scotland's weather is unpredictable, carrying an umbrella or a waterproof top is always advisable.

In case of any emergency, Police, Ambulance and Fire and Rescue can be contacted by phoning 999.
