About the Tour

Otago’s deep-water port has shaped New Zealand’s history since the 1840s.

On this walking tour, you’ll explore Port Chalmers’ rich maritime heritage, from its origins as the Māori settlement of Kōpūtai to its role in the gold rush era, and its continued importance today. You’ll also discover how its historic architecture, artistic community, and working port atmosphere give this harborside town its distinctive character.

The tour starts at Port Chalmers Maritime Museum, built in 1877 on reclaimed land. You’ll weave through the historic town center, passing the grand Municipal Town Hall, before climbing to a spectacular lookout with panoramic views of Otago Harbor, Quarantine Island, and the Otago Peninsula.

Along the way, you’ll discover how Port Chalmers became one of Australasia’s busiest ports during the 1860s gold rush. You’ll learn about the town’s Māori history as Kōpūtai, and discover how the town has evolved into a creative hub while maintaining its working port identity. The tour ends near the commemorative garden marking the 150th anniversary of the Port Chalmers land purchase.

During this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Visit Port Chalmers Maritime Museum, with its detailed ship models and new viewing gallery overlooking port operations
  • Explore the Hotere Garden Oputae featuring sculptures by one of New Zealand’s most significant artists, Ralph Hotere, who lived and worked here for over 40 years
  • Discover the Holy Trinity Church, built in 1874 from local breccia stone with decorative Oamaru stone elements
  • Admire the impressive Iona Presbyterian Church with its commanding spire and town clock that’s visible from the harbor
  • Browse the town’s vibrant art galleries, cafes, and boutique shops that reflect its creative community
  • Find out how the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, once the Southern Hemisphere’s largest shipping line, operated from this port
  • See historic buildings dating from the 1860s, when thousands of miners passed through on their way to the goldfields

By the end of this walk, you’ll have a sense of how this small but significant harbor town has played an outsized role in New Zealand’s economic and cultural development.

Tour Producer

Kia ora, I’m Virginia Driver — the creator behind Southern Compass and the voice guiding you through these immersive audio tours of New Zealand’s South Island.

After travelling extensively overseas, I chose to make my home in Ōtepoti/Dunedin, drawn by its dramatic landscapes, layered history, and strong sense of place. That connection to the South Island shapes every tour I create.

My work focuses on helping independent travellers experience places more deeply. These tours go beyond navigation, blending local history, Māori heritage, wildlife knowledge, and lived experience to share the stories that give each location meaning. From rugged coastlines to remote roads, I aim to highlight both the well-known landmarks and the quieter details that are often missed when travelling at speed.

Each tour is carefully researched, scripted, and recorded by me, with routes tested on the road to ensure accurate timing and a smooth listening experience. My storytelling style is personal, informative, and grounded — designed to feel like travelling with a knowledgeable local who knows when to talk and when to let the landscape speak for itself.

These tours are an invitation to slow down, listen closely, and connect with the South Island in a way that’s thoughtful, engaging, and respectful of the places and stories you’re travelling through.
