Otago Peninsula's Hidden Gems
About the Tour
The Otago Peninsula stretches like a finger from the city of Dunedin into the Pacific Ocean, creating a unique landscape where harbor meets high cliffs, rolling farmland and rugged coastlines. On this self-guided driving tour, you'll experience the peninsula's diverse ecosystems, discover hidden beaches, encounter remarkable wildlife, and explore historical sites that tell the story of early Māori and European settlement in New Zealand's southeast corner.
You'll start at the Portobello Road Information Stop, before driving along the winding harbor road. You'll have opportunities to visit the award-winning Glenfalloch Gardens, explore the beaches at Macandrew Bay and Broad Bay, and stop at the historic Fletcher House. The journey continues over the peninsula to the wild Pacific side where secluded beaches, volcanic formations like The Pyramids, and abundant marine wildlife await your discovery.
Along the way, you'll have chances to spot sea lions lounging on beaches, rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and numerous shorebirds. You'll learn about volcanic Harbour Cone (Hereweka), and can visit the world's only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross at Taiaroa Head. The tour ends near Waverley, where you'll discover the site of a notorious Gold Rush-era pleasure garden that once featured exotic animals and raucous entertainment.
On this 180-minute driving tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Visit Taiaroa Head, home to the world's only mainland breeding colony of Northern Royal Albatross and historic coastal defenses
- Explore Sandfly Bay's massive sand dunes, often spotting sea lions and penguins (if visiting at dusk)
- Stop at New Zealand's only castle – Larnach Castle, with its award-winning gardens and tragic family history
- Take a short walk to The Pyramids, unique volcanic formations, and Victory Beach where remnants of an 1861 shipwreck can still be seen
- Discover the Penguin Place conservation reserve, dedicated to protecting the endangered yellow-eyed penguin
- Visit Allan's Beach, a secluded white-sand beach where sea lions and seals often bask in the sun
- Enjoy panoramic views of the peninsula, harbor and Pacific Ocean from Highcliff Road
- Stop at the historic Portobello village, with its charming hotel, cafe and small museum
Take your time to fully experience this beautiful peninsula – the journey offers countless opportunities to stop, explore and connect with nature, making it one of New Zealand's most rewarding coastal drives.

The Southern Compass
Kia ora, I’m Virginia Driver — the creator behind Southern Compass and the voice guiding you through these immersive audio tours of New Zealand’s South Island.
After travelling extensively overseas, I chose to make my home in Ōtepoti/Dunedin, drawn by its dramatic landscapes, layered history, and strong sense of place. That connection to the South Island shapes every tour I create.
My work focuses on helping independent travellers experience places more deeply. These tours go beyond navigation, blending local history, Māori heritage, wildlife knowledge, and lived experience to share the stories that give each location meaning. From rugged coastlines to remote roads, I aim to highlight both the well-known landmarks and the quieter details that are often missed when travelling at speed.
Each tour is carefully researched, scripted, and recorded by me, with routes tested on the road to ensure accurate timing and a smooth listening experience. My storytelling style is personal, informative, and grounded — designed to feel like travelling with a knowledgeable local who knows when to talk and when to let the landscape speak for itself.
These tours are an invitation to slow down, listen closely, and connect with the South Island in a way that’s thoughtful, engaging, and respectful of the places and stories you’re travelling through.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are definitely a number of major attractions that I point out during the tour. Three of them do need to be booked in advance, Port to Port Cruises and Wildlife Tours, Monarch Wildlife Cruises and the Penguin Place. Otherwise other paid activities are Taiaroa Heads and Lanarch's Castle, with a donation at Glenfalloch Gardens.
Best time of day
This tour could be completed at any time of the day. In wet weather make sure you drive a bit slower due to summer ice
which means the roads can be a little bit slippery but all good if you drive to the conditions. If you are going to be at the end of the peninsula later on in the day it would be awesome to stop off and see the little blue penguins at Taiaroa Heads or book for the Penguin Place.
Precautions
Please make sure you listen to the voice guide about narrow and winding roads, some of which are unsealed. Please make sure you stick to the left of the narrow unsealed roads as much as possible but especially when you can't see what is coming. All other roads make sure you do stay on the left side of the road at all times and pull over if cars are behind when that is possible. Whilst the tour itself is wheelchair friendly some of the activities might not be, especially the walks.
