Dresden’s Colorful Neustadt: Courtyards, Graffiti and Defiance
About the Tour
Dresden’s “other side” is a vibrant canvas of creativity, rebellion, and reinvention.
On this walking tour, you’ll dive into Outer Neustadt’s bohemian spirit, where workers’ housing from the 1800s has been transformed into a distinctive artistic neighborhood. You’ll wander through streets that are alive with over 200 bars and cafés while hearing about the area’s evolution from sandy wasteland, to industrial zone, to alternative heartland.
The tour starts at Albertplatz, once the edge of old Dresden, now a gateway to Neustadt’s bohemian heart. You’ll weave through narrow streets where every surface becomes a potential canvas for expression – from elaborate murals and graffiti spanning entire buildings to tiny art pieces tucked into surprising corners.
As you walk, you’ll hear about the area’s brief life as a self-declared ”republic” following Germany’s reunification, and see how its rebellious spirit lives on today. The tour ends at Pfunds Molkerei, the “most beautiful dairy shop in the world,” where handpainted tiles tell the story of Dresden’s dairy industry.
On this 90-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Discover the remarkable Kunsthofpassage with its five whimsical-themed courtyards, including one with drainpipes that become instruments when it rains
- Hear the story of the “Bunte Republik Neustadt,” a short-lived micronation declared during Germany’s reunification
- Visit Café Raskolnikoff, a former squat whose deliberately unrestored façade is a monument to the neighborhood’s alternative roots
- Learn how this area became the birthplace of milk chocolate, predating the Swiss version by decades
- Admire the district’s distinctive Wilhelmine architecture with its ornate brick facades
By the end of this tour, you’ll have discovered a Dresden that thrives on creativity, defies convention, and remains stubbornly, colorfully itself. You’ll also have stumbled upon several places that you’d be unlikely to come across on your own.

Dresden bewitched me in 2009 when I was visiting it and I found myself casually wishing I could live here... just for a little while, a long holiday maybe. Little did I know that the wish would come true and years on I am still here. We have adopted each other- Dresden and I, and have come to know each others stories and secrets. These secrets are the ones I share in my guided walks which cover history, culture, scandal, treasures, war and post-war.
Every tour I create is built on months of research, uncovering the small details that bring a place to life. I don’t just describe what you see — I place it in the wider context of history, culture, and society, helping you understand how a location’s past shapes its present.
When you join me, you’ll experience more than a walking tour. You’ll gain a window into the stories, people, and events that have shaped the world around you, and discover the hidden layers that make each place unique.
Luckily I am supported by a team equally passionate about Dresden, and together we offer private and group tours under the banner See My Dresden.
Dresden has many sides. Each one is fascinating. We have it covered.
Come along now...there is so much I have to show you!
