About the Tour

Dordrecht may be the oldest city in Holland, but most visitors have never heard of it. On this walking tour, you'll trace how the city's medieval monopoly on river trade made it the most powerful city in Holland – and hear how that ended in just one single night. You'll also discover the politicians, merchants, and artists who left their mark on this remarkably well-preserved city.

The tour starts at Scheffersplein, a square that's not what it seems to be, beside a statue of painter Ary Scheffer – whose rejected commission for the work went to a sculptor who later created the Statue of Liberty. From there, you'll walk the Voorstraat, the lowest sea dike in the Netherlands, where metal hooks on house walls still hold the planks that keep floodwater at bay. You'll pass through the Donkere Steiger, the narrowest house in Dordrecht, built over one of the city's 27 historic jetties in 1632.

The route continues through the Arend Maartenshof, a 17th-century almshouse built by a notorious loan shark hoping to save his soul, and along the Wijnstraat, once home to 70 wine cellars and still the street with the highest concentration of listed monuments in Dordrecht. You'll walk the harbourfront quays, pass the Groothoofdspoort city gate – where Charles V, Napoleon, and William of Orange all entered the city – and hear how the Saint Elizabeth flood of 1421 wiped out Dordrecht's fortune overnight. The tour ends at the statue of Johan and Cornelis de Witt, two brothers born here who rose to lead the Dutch Republic before meeting a brutal end in one of history's darker episodes.

On this two-hour tour, you'll have a chance to:

  • Enter the Hof van Nederland, the courtyard where the first act of Dutch independence took place in 1572
  • Discover the narrowest street of Dordrecht, home to the office of the Sack Carriers' Guild
  • Spot surviving examples of the Dordrecht façade, a brick style abolished overnight when the guilds were dissolved in 1798
  • See the Mint of Holland, where Dordrecht held the exclusive right to mint Holland's coins for nearly 450 years
  • Walk around the Grote Kerk, a Gothic church whose 65-metre tower has been leaning more than two metres since it was built
  • Walk the cast-iron Nieuwbrug bridge, ordered from a catalogue in England in 1851

This tour is full of details that reward a closer look – so feel free to take your time.

I have now published four city walks for VoiceMap: three in Rotterdam and, from spring 2026, one in Dordrecht as well.

As a fellow VoiceMap user, I know exactly what I want from a tour: an easy and enjoyable way to explore a city, without having to read from a piece of paper or a screen.

The topics I cover are wide and varied, including: history, architecture, art and culture. to name a few. But I also cover the small details and fun facts that you would definitely miss without a guide.

With a clear and pleasant (and human!) voice, I'll tell you exactly how we'll be walking so you can give your full attention to the beautiful things we pass along the way.

You can set off at any time and walk as slowly or as quickly as you like. If you feel like popping into a shop or stopping for lunch along the way, you can do that too. You can stop the tour wherever and as often as you like and then resume it afterwards.
That's why I create these city walks — to give you complete freedom. There's no group or guide setting the pace.

I'm Dutch and I'm incredibly proud of my country's beauty and history. So if you have the time: do the walking tours in both Rotterdam and Dordrecht and discover just how beautiful and interesting the Netherlands are!

I'm sure you'll enjoy my tours just as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Groothoofdspoort City Gate 3

There you are!

There's a battle for attention going on here between the magnificent city gate and the river junction.

We'll start with the gate.
Walk towards the water — but not too far! — for a good view of the gate, and stop there.

At the beginning of the 15th cent...

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    3km
  2. Distance back to start location
    163.51m

Directions to Starting Point

Here are three ways to get to Dordrecht.

Waterbus The most fun way by far is the high-speed Waterbus from Rotterdam. The ferry takes about one hour at a friendly price - €15 for a round trip (2026).
The boarding point (Rotterdam Erasmus) to Dordrecht Merwekade is right next to the Erasmus Bridge opposite the cruise terminal. In Dordrecht, it's about an 8-minute walk to the starting point of our tour.
Tickets for the Waterbus can be bought on their website.

Train Trains arrive at Station Dordrecht from all directions. From Rotterdam, it's about a 20-minute ride. A round trip from Rotterdam CS is €12 (2026).
Train tickets can be bought online or through the NS Travel Planner app.

Car Navigate to any of the parking garages close to the center of Dordrecht. Parkeergarage Spuihaven and Parkeergarage Achterom are the biggest. I wouldn't try my luck parking in the streets. It's expensive (€5/hour) and spots are few and small.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Dordrecht is old and very compact; everything is within walking distance. You'll pass by many bars, terrasses and restaurants along the way.

Het Dordts Patriciërshuis (The Dordrecht Patrician House)
For opening hours and admission: https://dordtspatriciershuis.nl/en/

Best time of day

Choose any of the 365 days of the year! Dordrecht is beautiful all year round.

Precautions

Dordrecht, and certainly where we are walking, is super friendly. When it's busy, keeping an eye out for pickpockets is always good advice.

“This app has become my go-to app for audio tours. I pretty much use it for every trip and it works wonderfully. I highly recommend VoiceMap for travelers to truly experience cities.”
App Store Review
“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
