About the Tour

Please Note
Krystallen is under renovation to become the new headquarters of online department store Bootz.

Rediscover yourself against the transformative backdrop of Copenhagen, where every corner has stories about personal and citywide metamorphosis to tell.

On this unique walking tour, you‘ll see architectural jewels built in the last 100 years, from the historic Politigaarden (Police Headquarters) to the innovative sea farm beneath Kalvebod Bølge, or Kalvebod Wave. You‘ll also learn about the waterfront‘s transformation and be guided through a couple of mindfulness exercises.

The tour starts at the Espresso House Café located in the Scandic Spectrum hotel and ends in front of Krystallen (or The Crystal), an impressive geometrical see-through building. From there, you‘ll engage in self-reflection exercises while learning about Copenhagen and Kalvebod Pier‘s evolution. You‘ll see Next House, the luxury hostel, and the district that once housed the Danish Postal Service, now a business district with great public spaces for all to enjoy. Expect a blend of mindfulness, self-reflection, and walking meditation, amplifying your experience beyond traditional sightseeing and history – although you‘ll get a good mix of that too!

On this Copenhagen walking tour, you‘ll have a chance to:

  • Begin a journey of self-discovery right between two wonders of modern Danish architecture
  • See the workplace of Inspector Sarah Lund, the main character of the Danish cult show “The Killing”
  • Explore the concept of impermanence right by the waterfront
  • Witness urban bio alchemy at Bølgemarken, an underwater sea farm by Kalvebod Pier
  • Explore the recent history of Copenhagen‘s architecture, from postwar Hotel Europa to Nykredit‘s Crystal, a structure supported by a steel prism
  • Traverse Kalvebod Bølge, an extension of the pier, and find out how the name Copenhagen derives from the Danish word meaning ‘harbor of merchants‘

By the end of this Insightseeing™ journey in Copenhagen, you‘ll have a renewed connection to the city and yourself. You‘ll also have a new appreciation for the vibrant tales woven into Copenhagen‘s architectural evolution. Enjoy!

I’m Eliana, an accredited Copenhagen guide, Road Scholar lecturer, and creator of Insightseeing™ — a mindful approach to self-guided audio walking tours.

I hold a Professional Tourist Guide diploma from Roskilde University and have guided visitors through Copenhagen for over a decade. I’m a member of the Association of Qualified Tourist Guides in Denmark (TFF) and regularly lecture for the Road Scholar program, working with curious travelers seeking cultural depth.

Born in Colombia, raised in Ecuador, having lived in Canada and now based in Denmark, my cross-cultural background shapes how I experience and interpret places.

I created Insightseeing™ in 2021 after noticing that travelers weren’t only interested in landmarks, but in how walking through a place made them feel. My GPS-based Audio Insightseeings™ on VoiceMap blend Copenhagen history, cultural insight, and gentle reflective prompts.

They’re designed for travelers and locals alike — to explore Copenhagen at your own pace, with curiosity, presence, and space for inner reflection.

Sightseeing, with insight.

Until as late as the end of the 1980s this place was really honoring the name of the city. The word "Copenhagen" derives from “København '' which is the name of the city in Danish. It mean...

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    1km
  2. Distance back to start location
    114.01m

Directions to Starting Point

The tour starts right outside the Espresso House café located on the ground floor of the Scandic Spectrum Hotel. The exact address of the café is Kalvebod Brygge 10, 1560 København.

You’ll know you are at the right place when you see the concrete benches right in front of the door of the café, which in turn face an open square with a large prism-looking building on the other side of it.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Visit Next House inside
If you have time and are curious, try to get in to see some of the common areas: there are hanging gardens, a mini stadium, a fitness center, a communal kitchen, a movie theater AND last but not least, an amazing rooftop garden/bar with a great view of all the area.

For the big picture of Copenhagen Harbor -
I recommend you take one of the canal tours in Copenhagen. The closest one to the tour route is the Kalvebod Terminal for Hey Captain, a company offering both private and public tours of the harbor under the concept “Social Sailing”, combining sightseeing in the harbor with Danish hospitality and “hygge” (the Scandinavian term for feelings of contentment and wellbeing).

Take your bathing suit with you -
This tour takes you right next to one of the harbor baths of the city. Why not take the Copenhagen experience one step further? Pack your bathing suit and a light towel with you, but just know that there are no changing rooms available so you’ll have to be very skilled to be able to change below your towel or just do it as many Danes do it: au natural ;)

“Inventory” sculptures new location -
Sundkrogsgade 25, 2150 Copenhagen (new headquarters of the Nykredit Bank)

Best time of day

The best time to do the tour is from dawn to dusk, and from May to September, when the weather is not so cold.

Precautions

There are quite a lot of street crossings in this tour. Basically all of them are done through pedestrian crossings, but just make sure you’re very aware when getting around, as fast bicycles are a real threat!

Also, as in any European capital, be aware of your surroundings as there could be pickpockets.

App Store Review
“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
