Built, Burned, and Reborn: A Copenhagen Walking Tour
About the Tour
Copenhagen's story stretches back further than most visitors realise – not to Bishop Absalon's castle, but to a Viking-age merchants' harbour that predates it by centuries. On this walking tour, you'll trace how fires, wars, royal ambition, and radical thinkers transformed that ancient settlement into one of Europe's most distinctive capitals. You'll also discover how the city rebuilt itself, again and again, into the place you're exploring today.
The tour starts at the equestrian monument of Bishop Absalon on Højbro Plads. From there, you'll cross onto Slotsholmen – Palace Island – where five successive castles have risen and burned on the same ground. You'll hear how two catastrophic fires in 1728 and 1795 erased the medieval city, and how the strict building codes that followed gave Copenhagen its elegant, uniform streetscape.
Along the way, you'll pass through the Royal Library Garden, a former naval harbour turned peaceful refuge, and into the Latin Quarter, where the University of Copenhagen has stood since 1479.
The route continues through some of the city's oldest surviving streets – Snaregade and Magstræde – past the Church of the Holy Spirit, Copenhagen Courthouse with its haunted past, and the Round Tower, built by the builder-king Christian IV as an astronomical observatory. You'll also meet Søren Kierkegaard, Hans Christian Andersen, and astronomer Ole Rømer, whose 1676 discovery proved that light has a measurable speed. The tour ends at Rosenborg Palace, surrounded by the Rose Garden, a Dutch Renaissance masterpiece that was Christian IV's favourite home and his chosen place to die.
On this three-hour tour, you'll have a chance to:
• Visit Copenhagen City Hall and hear the story of the War of the Towers – a dramatic episode in the city’s architectural rivalry
• Stand before the Hans Christian Andersen monument and discover the man behind the fairy tales
• Stroll through King’s Garden (Kongens Have), Denmark’s oldest royal garden, shaped by centuries of royal life and everyday Copenhageners
• Stand atop the free Christiansborg Tower, the best vantage point in the city, above five centuries of Danish political power
• Hear how the 1807 British bombardment reduced a third of Copenhagen to rubble and bankrupted the entire nation
• Explore Gammeltorv, site of medieval executions, and the 1608 Caritas Well – still dancing with golden apples on royal celebrations
• Visit the Cathedral of Our Lady, where Bertel Thorvaldsen's marble Christ has drawn pilgrims since 1839
• Discover Centralhjørnet, widely recognised as the world's oldest continuously operating gay bar, open since 1917
• Walk through Kringlegangen, a rare surviving courtyard passage from 1856, lined in the golden Copenhagen Yellow
that defines the city
This tour is an invitation to look closer at a city that has survived everything thrown at it – and kept its character intact.
Tour Producer
Pernille Schlander
Hello! I’m Pernille.
I’m a Copenhagen-based storyteller and walking tour creator, and I’ve called this city home since 2004. For more than twenty years, my greatest passion has been uncovering the many layers of Copenhagen — exploring its history and seeking out every hidden nook and cranny.
My fascination with the secrets of cities began long before that. Influenced by years of global travel and a formative chapter living in London, I’ve come to see every street corner as a page in a living history book.
For the past six years, I’ve turned that passion into curated walking tours and created 5 immersive audio walk experiences. Each tour is carefully researched and built from first-hand exploration. I walk every route myself. I don’t simply list facts — I weave stories. Each route is carefully planned to guide you through places you might never discover on your own.
My work is especially inspired by Hans Christian Andersen, Copenhagen’s history, and changing neighborhoods. Whether I’m guiding you through grand landmarks, charming streets, or seasonal stories, my goal is always the same: to help you feel connected to the city and leave with a deeper understanding of its people, past, and personality.
If you enjoy thoughtful storytelling, gentle adventure, and discovering places through local eyes, I’d love to walk Copenhagen with you. Just bring comfortable shoes — I’ll take care of the stories (and a little Danish hygge along the way).

The great fires of 1728 and 1795
It wasn’t just Palace Island that suffered from fire and destruction. The entire city bears the marks of two great fires, in 1728 and 1795. And today, you’ll hear about them often—not just for the flames they unlea...
