About the Tour

Kollupitiya, Colombo's seafront neighbourhood, still carries the fingerprints of a leafy grove, colonial land grabs, and independence-era ambition. On this walking tour, you'll find out how a plundered stretch of coastal land became one of Colombo's most sought-after neighbourhoods. You'll also hear how protest, faith, and commerce have reshaped it.

The tour starts at the National Flag Post on Galle Face Green, once a Dutch military ground and British recreation field, and later the site of the 2022 Aragalaya protests. You'll walk the historic seafront promenade toward the colonial-era Galle Face Hotel, pass Galle Face Court, Sri Lanka's oldest surviving apartment complex, before turning inland through Kollupitiya's quieter lanes.

Along the way, you'll hear the story behind Kollupitiya's name, rooted in a 1664 rebellion and a parcel of land seized from local villagers. You'll pass St Andrew's Scots Church, built for homesick Scottish tea planters, a Buddhist temple with a mango tree planted by Sri Lanka's first prime minister, and the Old Washers' Village, where a 1896 laundrymen's strike shut down Colombo's dhobis for three weeks. The tour ends at Liberty Plaza, Sri Lanka's oldest still-functioning shopping mall, beside Rohan's Bookstore.

On this 75-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:

  • Visit the Church of St Michael and All Angels, known locally as Gal Palliya or Stone Church, with its 1922 memorial pipe organ
  • Try local coffee at Ceylon Kahawa, a women-focused farm-to-cup café sourcing beans from a Bandarawela estate
  • Learn how coffee, not tea, was Ceylon's first plantation crop before a fungal blight wiped it out
  • Spot Nelson Lane, possibly named for a solicitor or for Admiral Nelson himself
  • See the Kollupitiya Jummah Masjid, whose origins trace back to a small 1792 prayer room
  • Pass the Taj Samudra and Cinnamon Grand hotels, marking Kollupitiya's transformation into a five-star city neighbourhood
  • Hear how a Supreme Court case settled a dispute over communal washing rights among Polwatte's dhobi families

By the time you reach Liberty Plaza, you'll understand exactly how a village once referred to as Kolla-ke-pitiya, or plundered land, became modern Kollupitiya.

Ahila Thillainathan is an international development professional, with over 20 years' experience in social development, specializing in child rights, gender and social cohesion. She is an avid traveller and a storyteller, who has been re-discovering her home city with fresh eyes since 2016. Ahila strongly felt that Colombo was underrated as a travel destination within Sri Lanka. She therefore created the brand Colombo Untold to bring the hidden or lesser-known stories about Colombo in the form of heritage walks. Her vision is to design heritage walks for each of the 15 neighbourhoods of modern Colombo. Her walks are designed to highlight nuggets of history hidden in plain sight that tells the unique story of the neighbourhood and Colombo, overall. Ahila is exploring different mediums and styles to share Colombo's stories. You can find her audio stories here on Voice Map.

Ahila recommends these walks for both the traveler to Sri Lanka and those living in Sri Lanka, as a fun heritage walk that not only gives you a slice of this fascinating city's history but also gets you walking around different neighbourhoods, that you might not visit otherwise.

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    3km
  2. Distance back to start location
    2km

Directions to Starting Point

The tour begins at the National Flag Post on Galle Face Green, at the end nearer to the Port City. (The address is National Flag Post, WRFV+RQ6, Galle Face Dr, Colombo, Sri Lanka)

Please look for Sri Lanka's national flag on the Green and make your way to the walkway beside it. Once you are near the flagpost, VoiceMap will indicate how many metres you are from the starting point. The tour starts when you are at the point on the walkway in the middle of the National Flagpost and the viewing pier, which has the "I love Sri Lanka" cutout.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you enjoy coffee, do stop at Ceylon Kahawa on Rotunda Gardens. A little spot to grab a cup of Sri Lankan coffee roasted from beans grown at their own estate in Bandarawela.

I also recommend Rohan's Bookstore at Liberty Plaza shopping mall, for booklovers. It showcases books on Sri Lanka and by Sri Lankan writers.

Both the Polwatte Sri Dharmakirti Viharaya and Church of St Michaels and All Angels, which you will pass during your walk, are worth stepping into. There is also a tiny Hindu temple built around a tree, that is somewhat of a blink, and you miss kind of spot, next to the mosque on St Michael's road that might be of interest for those interested in different faiths. Do note that you would need to remove footwear and caps, when you step into temples. The dogs at the Buddhist temple get particularly offended when you walk in wearing a cap. I got barked at once, when I forgot to take my cap off during a very sunny mid-morning walk, and a staff came out to see what was causing the commotion. They only calmed down as soon as I removed my cap, and I have been wondering how they figured out that it is disrespectful to walk into a temple with your cap or hat.

For those who love bustling markets, do step into the Kollupitiya market to see the varieties of fresh produce on the lower floors and imported goods on the upper floors.

If you prefer your coffee at the end of the walk, there is Damn Fine Coffee, another cafe selling locally sourced coffee. It is located on Abdul Gaffoor Mawatha on the ground floor of the FitsAir building, a few minutes' walk from Liberty Plaza.

Best time of day

To avoid the heat of Colombo, it is recommended that the walk be taken early in the morning or later in the afternoon, all year around. However, two locations that you will pass by in your walk have specific opening times, if you want to step in and explore them. The church around 9am and Liberty Plaza at 10am.

Please be mindful when you cross Galle Road and Dharmapala Road. Both these roads have heavy traffic so please pay attention when you cross the road without being distracted by the audio.

Precautions

The walking route passes through narrow lanes which might not have bright streetlights in the night, so it is safer to do the walk during daylight hours.

I always take an umbrella or a cap with me, because the sun can be quite harsh even by 8am. Additionally, sunblock, a bottle of water, wet wipes and a pair of sunglasses will be helpful.
