Cleveland Past and Present: A Downtown Walking Tour
About the Tour
Cleveland’s strategic location on the nation’s waterways helped it grow from a frontier outpost into an industrial powerhouse. On this walking tour, you’ll discover how the city is transforming its historic buildings and neighborhoods while honoring its rich past.
This tour starts at Public Square, Cleveland’s town center, where you’ll see the Soldiers and Sailors Monument honoring Civil War veterans. You’ll stroll down Euclid Avenue, once known as “Millionaires’ Row” for its 240 magnificent mansions, some housing industrial titans like John D. Rockefeller.
Along the way, you’ll see stunning architecture like the Hyatt Arcade, built in 1890 as one of America’s first indoor shopping centers, and now beautifully preserved as a hotel. The tour ends outside a Starbucks near the Warehouse District which runs from West 3rd Street to West 9th.
During this 90-minute walk, you’ll have a chance to:
- Visit Heinen’s Grocery Store, housed in a former bank and featuring a stunning Tiffany-style stained glass dome
- Experience the vibrant East 4th Street pedestrian district, once Cleveland’s first theater district, now filled with restaurants and entertainment venues
- Learn about the famous Millionaires’ Row, where half the world’s millionaires lived in 1887 during Cleveland’s industrial heyday
- Step inside the 5th Street Arcades, historic shopping malls that showcase Cleveland’s early 20th-century commercial architecture
- See Playhouse Square – the city’s impressive performing arts complex and the largest in the country – with its 11 theaters hosting over 1,000 events annually
- Discover how Cleveland’s strategic location on Lake Erie fueled its growth into the nation’s sixth-largest city by the 1930s
- Appreciate the city’s ambitious lakefront development plans aimed at better connecting downtown to Lake Erie
By the end of this tour, you’ll understand how Cleveland showcases the creative ways a post-industrial city can reinvent itself, creating a walkable mid-sized city that continues to surprise visitors.

Cleveland is a vibrant Great Lakes city known for its rich industrial history, world-class culture, and resilient community spirit. Located along the shores of Lake Erie, it offers beautiful waterfront parks, a thriving arts scene anchored by institutions like the Cleveland Museum of Art and Playhouse Square, and strong sports traditions.
One of the areas we highlight is Euclid Avenue, once known as Millionaire’s Row. Mansions, Theaters, Department Stores, Historic banks, and Private clubs were built here that catered to the wealthy industrialists who wanted a refined society in Cleveland. Many remain, but as the country changed, so did Cleveland. Renovations and repurposes took place. You will be surprised how much you see in this 12-block area.
Once a powerhouse of steel and manufacturing, Cleveland has reinvented itself with revitalized neighborhoods, innovative healthcare and education, and a growing food and music scene that celebrates both its past and its future.
You will be surprised what our city offers.
