About the Tour

Cardiff Bay’s transformation from an industrial dockland to a cultural hub is filled with surprising stories. On this walking tour, you’ll explore its waterfront through the eyes of a witty local guide who reveals the area’s rich maritime past and artistic present.

Starting in front of the iconic Wales Millennium Centre, you’ll stroll along the bay’s boardwalks and public spaces. As you walk, you’ll learn how this once-bustling coal port became the vibrant waterfront district you see today. You’ll also hear about the origins of Cardiff’s nickname, Tiger Bay, and how it proudly carries the moniker.

As you make your way to the Welsh parliament building, the Senedd, where the tour ends, you’ll walk past architectural landmarks both historical and modern. You’ll see the terracotta Pierhead Building with its ornate stonework and the eye-catching red Origami Bridge. You’ll also encounter numerous sculptures, artworks, and memorials that tell the story of Cardiff’s seafaring heritage.

On this 75-minute Cardiff tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Explore Roald Dahl Plass, a public space and attraction, and discover the famous children’s author’s connection to Cardiff
  • Marvel at Harvey Hood’s Celtic Ring sculpture with its maritime-themed reliefs depicting local landmarks and tidal charts
  • Visit Ianto’s Shrine, the touching fan memorial to a beloved Torchwood TV character that has become a Cardiff Bay institution
  • Learn about the ”Codebreakers” at the impressive bronze statue honouring three pioneering Black Welsh rugby players
  • Examine the Panorama Stone Cardiff Bay art trail with its bronze pegs pointing to international locations connected to the city’s maritime past
  • Discover the history of the Norwegian Church Arts Centre, once a vital hub for Scandinavian sailors far from home
  • See the poignant Merchant Seaman’s Memorial commemorating sailors who served from Cardiff Bay
  • Hear the story behind the Beastie Benches sculptures inspired by Dylan Thomas’s poetry

This relaxed walk follows accessible pathways with plenty of opportunities to admire panoramic views across the bay toward Penarth. You’ll hear fascinating tales about the area’s industrial past, maritime connections, and the diverse communities that have shaped its character, all delivered with a touch of Welsh humour and insight.

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    2km
  2. Distance back to start location
    174.84m

Directions to Starting Point

The tour begins infront of the main entrance to the Wales Millennium Centre. Look for 3 stars embedded in the pavement at the starting point.

There's a nearby train station with trains to and from downtown Cardiff. There's also a very closeby bus stop - again with buses running to and from downtown Cardiff, and further afield.

If you're heading here from Penarth, on the far side of Cardiff Bay, you may like to walk or cycle the couple of miles across the pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly Barrage. The views are fantastic!

Tips

Places to stop along the way

To start with, take a look inside the Wales Millennium Centre - there's a place to grab a coffee and a washroom if needed before starting the tour. As you walk down Roald Dhal Plass you'll see several cafes and restaurants on each side of the Plass. Everyman Cinema above and to your right from Roald Dhal Plass has great views over Cardiff Bay from inside. There's also a cafe.

Later on, the Pierhead Building, and the Norwegian Church are also buildings worth a peek inside.

If you need further refreshment, the Mount Stuart pub is a great place for a cool (or hot) drink and something to eat - go upstairs to enjoy another viewpoint worthy of the climb up the stairs.

Best time of day

The best time to do this tour is on a clear, sunny day, as you'll get the best views across the Bay. However, this being Britain, we can never be sure of the weather. But even if it's inclement, there are plenty of places along the tour to take a break.

Precautions

This tour is designed on a route that is accessible for those pushing prams or using wheelchairs. Where there are steps, there are also nearby ramped alternatives.

Sunblock and an umbrella may be things to consider taking on this tour - British weather is quite changeable!! A bottle of water would be good too. However you'll never be far from cafes, pubs or restaurants if you need a refresh.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
