Starting outside the CannOlive store at the edge of the New Town and Old Town, you’ll hear the secrets of Cannes’ past while meandering through its picturesque cobblestone streets. You’ll pass La Tarte Tropezienne, a boutique named after the traditional pastry, and stroll through Marché Forville, where locals buy fresh produce and artisanal goods. As you make your way to Boulevard de la Croisette where our tour ends, you’ll learn how the historical Le Suquet district was built on a Roman military camp on the hill. Long before it became a hotspot for the rich and famous, it was a sleepy fishing village.

The boutique to your left is the fruit of a long family history. Perfume reigns in the South of France thanks to our abundant lavender and flower fields. Founded in Grasse, the capitol of perfume, in 1926 by a former Parisian notary by the name of Eugène Fuchs and is currently run by his two great-granddaughters, Françoise & Angès Costa, Fragonard is one of the oldest perfume houses in Grasse and has been at the forefront of the perfume industry since its inception. You can visit its factory to learn more about production and visit the Museum of Perfume which showcases over 5,000 years of history.

Here we have the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, or in English, the Chapel of Mercy. Built in 1617 by the Pénitents Noirs. It was originally called "Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde du Bord de Mer" or Our Lady of Mercy on the Sea. It features a baptismal front that dates back to 1620. This religious site is under the Parish of Saint-Nicolas and belongs to the Diocese of Nice. The chapel primarily serves Catholic worship contributing to Cannes’ religious heritage, but it also contributes greatly to the city’s tourism.

The Pénitents Noirs, or the Black Penitents, had chapters throughout many parts of France, and like many other towns, Cannes too had its own confraternity. The confraternities across different cities typically shared a common goal of performing acts of charity and penitence in anonymity for spiritual merit rather than for public praise, but each chapter would also have its customs and traditions.

In Cannes, the confraternity was known as the Brotherhood of Black Penitents of the Holy Cross, which had its own distinctive traditions and activities within the local community. These brotherhoods were particularly focused on religious ceremonies during the period of Lent and Holy Week.

Establishments linked to these brotherhoods, like chapels and religious meeting houses, would often be decorated with artworks and would see gatherings for prayer as well as serve as locations for charity work. The decoration and architecture of their chapels could be quite distinctive and play a role in the cultural and religious life of the city.

More recently, since 2012, the chapel has housed Pierre Cochereau's former mobile organ, built by Philippe Hartmann in 1961.

The tour begins in front of Cann'Olive (20 Rue Venizelos 16 et, 06400 Cannes, France), a boutique only a few steps away from the Cannes train station. Once you arrive at the train station, exit the station and cross the street through the bus station to Rue Jean Jaures. Once on this road turn right and continue straight. You will see Cann'Olive on your left.
