Conquerors, Towers, and Sardinian Secrets: A Cagliari Walking Tour
About the Tour
Cagliari’s culture is so distinct that Sardinians still call mainland Italy “the continent.“ On this walking tour, you’ll find out how the city was shaped by conquest and exchange, with Phoenicians, Romans, Pisans, Aragonese, and Spanish rulers all leaving their mark on Sardinia’s capital. I’ll also show you the architectural styles and traditions that survive in this hilltop citadel.
The tour starts at the Piazza Yenne, where all four of the city’s historic quarters converge. You’ll climb through the ancient defensive walls into Castello, the medieval heart of political and religious power. You’ll explore narrow streets designed to confuse invaders, visit viewpoints that reveal the city’s strategic position, and learn how each conquering civilization adapted the urban landscape to suit their needs.
The tour ends at Independence Square. I’ll point out where the San Pancrazio Tower marks the northern entrance to the fortress district, completing a circuit that shows how geography and human ambition created one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating urban environments.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Climb up to the Bastion of Saint Remy’s panoramic terrace and hear about Mussolini’s early support before the devastating 1943 Allied bombing
- Walk through the Lion’s Gate with its “monkey-faced“ lions and see its medieval defensive walls
- Explore the Elephant Tower, once a notorious Spanish prison where rebels’ heads were displayed for 17 years
- Visit Cagliari Cathedral’s underground Sanctuary of Martyrs, housing 192 saint relics
- Learn about the traditional Sardinian flag’s four Moor heads and how their symbolism changed
- Discover the crypt where royal tombs include Maria Giuseppina of Savoy, exiled wife of Louis XVIII
- See the medieval quarter’s abandoned buildings, left as reminders of war’s devastation since after the 1943 bombings
- Stand where Sardinians were once forced to leave Castello each evening at 8pm, with violators thrown from the ancient walls
By the end of this 60-minute tour, you’ll have explored the Mediterranean’s best-preserved medieval fortress, where centuries of conflict and transformation are etched into stone.

Hi, I'm Giulia!
I was born and raised in the beautiful island of Sardinia but my love for travelling took me around the world, living in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South East Asia and Spain.
I'm passionate about history and culture and becoming a tour guide has allowed me to do what I love most: telling stories to people from different parts of the world, connecting and having fun together.
When I'm not phisically available to guide people around the world, I find that VoiceMap is a great opportunity to still engage with travellers on a different level, and bring them closer to my hometown and the places that are dearest to me.
During the years I've specialized in ethical and responsable tourism, helping travellers have a better impact while on their trip, protecting wildlife, environments and local communities, sharing tips and practices to enjoy travels in the best way.
I'm looking forward to share my tours with you!
