Cagliari’s Marina District: Centuries of Mediterranean Culture
About the Tour
Cagliari has always been a strategic Mediterranean gateway.
On this walking tour, you’ll explore the vibrant Marina district, one of Cagliari’s four historic quarters. During its 2,500-year history, it’s been home to fishermen, merchants, and sailors from across the Mediterranean. Today it offers a lively mix of cultures, colors, and traditions where the scent of salt air mingles with the aromas of local cuisine.
The tour starts in Piazza Martiri d’Italia, where a small obelisk commemorates Sardinians who died during Italy’s 1861 unification. You’ll weave through narrow cobblestone streets, past wrought-iron balconies dating back to the 1800s, and under elegant archways that once framed the hustle and bustle of merchants.
Along the way, you’ll find out how the neighborhood was shaped by Spanish, Pisan, and Savoy influences, and hear about Sardinia’s unique autonomous status. You’ll see remnants of Roman roads beneath modern structures, and encounter historic squares that once served as graveyards but now buzz with locals enjoying aperitivos. The tour ends at the beautiful Town Hall (Palazzo Civico), built in 1907 to symbolize a shift from Cagliari’s aristocratic past toward a more inclusive future.
On this 40-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Enter the Chiesa di Santa Rosalia (Church of Santa Rosalia), where the body of Saint Salvatore of Horta has rested since 1758
- Descend into the haunting crypt of San Sepolcro, where an image of Death as a skeleton declares “Nemini parco” (I spare no one)
- Walk through Portico Sant’Antonio, a covered walkway that once sheltered open-air markets and religious fairs
- Discover the church of Sant’Eulalia, built by the Aragonese in the 1300s, with Roman roads and temple ruins beneath it
- See the Regional Council of Sardinia and learn about the island’s special autonomous status
- Stroll along elegant Via Roma, once Cagliari’s main
salotto
, lined with porticoed buildings - explore ancient crypts where the Archconfraternity of Prayer and Death once buried the city’s poor,
- Admire the church of San Francesco di Paola, whose saint delivered the city from severe drought in 1739
Take this walking tour to discover how the Marina district’s layered past tells the story of Cagliari’s evolution, from an ancient port to a modern Mediterranean capital.

Giulia Naitza
Hi, I'm Giulia!
I was born and raised in the beautiful island of Sardinia but my love for travelling took me around the world, living in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South East Asia and Spain.
I'm passionate about history and culture and becoming a tour guide has allowed me to do what I love most: telling stories to people from different parts of the world, connecting and having fun together.
When I'm not phisically available to guide people around the world, I find that VoiceMap is a great opportunity to still engage with travellers on a different level, and bring them closer to my hometown and the places that are dearest to me.
During the years I've specialized in ethical and responsable tourism, helping travellers have a better impact while on their trip, protecting wildlife, environments and local communities, sharing tips and practices to enjoy travels in the best way.
I'm looking forward to share my tours with you!
