Butrint UNESCO Heritage Walk: From Troy to Rome
About the Tour
Butrint has been continuously occupied for nearly 3,000 years, layered with the ambitions of Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians – all drawn to this peculiar peninsula where water is both protector and threat. On this self-guided tour, you'll trace how a modest settlement became one of Rome's most storied colonies, then watch it slowly surrender to rising waters and abandonment.
The tour starts at the Entrance of the site, heading for the Venetian tower where you'll get your bearings against the backdrop of the Vivari channel and the triangular fortress across the water. From there, the route leads chronologically through the ancient city – past the Temple of Asclepius, the Greek theater built into the Acropolis hillside, the Baptistere, and the Great Basilica – before climbing to the Venetian castle and its commanding panoramic views over Butrint Lake and beyond.
Along the way, you'll learn how Julius Caesar's civil war with Pompey changed Butrint's fate forever, turning a provincial town into a thriving Roman colony. You'll also discover how the site slipped from Byzantine hands into Norman, Angevin, and finally Venetian control, before Ali Pasha Tepelena seized it in the early 1800s and the Ottomans left it to the snakes. The tour ends at the site museum, established during the original Italian excavations of the 1930s, where over 1,300 objects span prehistoric times through the Venetian period.
On this tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Stand inside the 200s BC Greek theater, still partially flooded by the encroaching lake
- Examine the Baptistery's extraordinary 6th-century mosaic floor, with peacocks, stags, and leopards rendered in intricate detail
- Decipher ancient Greek inscriptions on the Wall of Inscriptions, recording slaves granted their freedom at the sanctuary
- Visit the Lion Gate, carved with a relief of a lion attacking a bull, them Skea Gate named after a myth connecting Butrint to the fall of Troy
- Explore the Triconch Palace, a late Roman villa with a pier where VIP visitors once docked directly
- See the Great Basilica, one of the best-preserved 6th-century Christian basilicas in the Mediterranean
If you've ever wanted to understand how empires rise, adapt, and disappear, Butrint tells that story better than almost anywhere else in Albania.
Please note: This tour does not include entrance tickets to the site.
