Broulee Island was declared a Nature Reserve in 1972 and is now managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. Nature reserves are areas of land in predominantly untouched, natural condition, with high conservation value.

The bay you're walking around now is known as Boat Harbour. When you get to the very end of the beach, take note of how calm it is even on the wildest windy day. It's shallow waters, extending a long way out, and lack of any waves make a wonderful place to swim for young and old alike on a hot summers day.

Broulee was established in the 1830's and it was these protected waters that were attractive to ships transporting produce to and from Moruya in the south to the rapidly growing Sydney settlement. This shallow Boat Harbour is far from ideal as an anchorage for large vessels, but was still considered preferable over trying to access Moruya directly. This required negotiating the shallow, dangerous and unpredictable entrance of the Moruya River.

The ships anchored here in Boat Harbour to load and unload goods, stocks and people. From here, items were transferred to small boats known as "punts" that found it easier and safer to navigate the Moruya river. In reality, Moruya depended on Broulee to provide a port, but more importantly Broulee's prosperity depended on Moruya.

These sheltered waters still provide good anchorage today. Small yachts will occasionally anchor out from here for a few days when the weather is rough from a southerly direction.

This co-dependence ended in 1841, when a large flood washed out the sandbar at the entrance to the Moruya River. This deepened the passage and allowed ships to enter directly with greater safety. Ships were now not required to stop at Boat Harbour and the temporary decline of Broulee commenced.

A letter published by the Sydney Morning Herald years later, in 1856, described Broulee as barren and sandy for 3 miles inland with no reliable fresh water. Not a lot has changed today, as anyone who has tried to grow any garden produce will attest. However, a lot of properties in modern Broulee do have underground bore water pumps to use on their gardens.

A German immigrant witnessed the local Aboriginals conduct a Corroboree near Boat Harbour in the 1850's . He described it as "Twelve powerful young men, naked, their arms and legs covered in white stripes, were chanting a monotonous wild song, in time with the beat of possum drums. With exact regularity, they clashed their weapons together, the boomerang against the spear, the nulla nulla against the shield. One by one, each demonstrated his individual skill. "

This walk is on a Nature reserve and therefore no fishing or animals are permitted and penalties do apply. There is no drinking water so take you own if it's a hot day. The walk covers level but at times uneven ground, so take you time. If the ocean is rough it's recommended to wait until the tide is low.
