The Best of Bordeaux: A Sightseeing Walk
About the Tour
Want to get to know the best of Bordeaux in 45 minutes? Then join me on this unique audio tour of its city centre where I’ll share my favourite parts of its rich and fascinating history. I’ll take you to some of the main sights like the Bordeaux Cathedral, with its beautiful Gothic architecture, and the famous neoclassical theatre, Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. But I’ll also show you some tucked away places that aren’t well known. You’ll hear about everything from disappearing monuments and almost-forgotten Roman temples to wild stories of medieval queens and bloody revolutionaries.
Some of the landmarks you’ll see along the way include:
- The Monument aux Girondins
- The Grand Théatre de Bordeaux
- The Bordeaux Cathedral
- The Pey Berland Tower
- The Cailhau Gate Bordeaux
You think Bordeaux is good only for its wine? Let me show you otherwise! Whether it’s your first time in Bordeaux or you’ve been living here for years, this tour is a brilliant introduction to the historic centre.

Directions to Starting Point
The Monument aux Girondins is our starting point. It’s positioned on the Esplanade des Quinconces, on the opposite end to the river Garonne. Please go to the side of the monument which is next to the tramlines; ie. the side which doesn’t face the esplanade. From there you can start the audio tour!
Getting to the Quinconces is very easy. You can walk or cycle to this location if you’re staying in the centre of town. If you’re coming from further away, you can take either tram C or D to the Quinconces stop. The monument is to the right of the tram station and you will see it as soon as you get off the tram.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Some of the places we'll visit along the way include the Monument aux Girondins, Grand Théatre, Cathedral St André, Tour Pey Berland, and Porte Cailhau.
Best time of day
In the summer months, Bordeaux can be extremely hot in the middle of the day. It’s best to avoid being outside from 1pm until 4pm during June, July and August. Apart from during these hot hours, Bordeaux is pleasant to walk around because of the gorgeous pedestrian zones in the centre of town. Our audio tour is the perfect way to experience Bordeaux at the time that suits you.
Precautions
Please be aware of the tramlines as we cross them throughout the walk. Bordeaux is a very bicycle-friendly city and so please also be aware when walking along or crossing roads.
