Bordeaux by a Local: A Walk through the Centuries
About the Tour
Bordeaux has centuries of stories etched into its limestone facades and cobblestone streets.
On this walking tour, you’ll explore the architectural masterpieces, hidden passages, and historical landmarks that have shaped this UNESCO World Heritage site. As you walk, you’ll hear how Bordeaux has transformed from a medieval walled city to the elegant urban center you see today. I’ll also tell you about some of the fascinating characters who lived here, and the events and revolutionary changes that rewrote history.
The tour starts at the magnificent Grand Théâtre, a neoclassical masterpiece from the 1700s built atop ancient Roman foundations. You’ll weave through medieval streets and elegant squares, passing churches, hidden shopping passages, and buildings adorned with mascarons – the decorative faces that tell stories of the city’s past. Along the way, you’ll learn how the city’s architecture reflects its prosperous trading history.
You’ll also visit the Big Bell Tower with its historic clocks. As you stroll along Rue Saint-James, you’ll follow in the footsteps of pilgrims who journeyed to Santiago de Compostela for centuries. The tour ends at Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux’s most iconic square, where you can admire the symmetrical 18th-century facades and the world’s largest reflecting pool.
During this 40-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Admire the Grand Théâtre’s innovative design that later inspired Paris’s Opéra Garnier
- Explore Passage Sarget, a romantic hidden arcade built by a wine merchant for his wife
- Learn the origin story of canelés, Bordeaux’s beloved rum-infused pastries first created by nuns
- Visit Saint-André Cathedral, where 13-year-old Aleanor of Aquitaine’s wedding transformed Bordeaux into a wealthy wine hub
- See the former Church of Saint-Siméon, now transformed into the charming Utopia Cinema
- Discover the history behind Grands wines of Bordeaux
- Find out how medieval street lighting evolved from required household candles to city-managed systems
- Understand the geographical divide between Bordeaux’s Left Bank and Right Bank wine regions
By the end of this tour, you’ll have experienced Bordeaux through a local’s eyes, discovering the stories hidden in plain sight that bring the city’s rich past to life.
Tour Producer
Bordeaux with Marina Cauchie
Hello!
I’m Marina, an independent local guide living in Bordeaux since 2018. I’m passionate about history, culture, art, and the people who have shaped this region over the centuries. I love helping my guests not just see a place, but really feel it — the stories, the little details, and the life behind the buildings and streets.
On my tours, I carefully choose the most interesting historical facts, fascinating events, and personal stories to make the city or region come alive. I’ll point out things you might never notice walking alone — a carved symbol above a door, a quiet street with a story, or a hidden square tucked away from the main avenues. These are the details that make history tangible and memorable.
Exploring with me is like walking with a local friend who knows the area inside and out. I love sharing not just history, but also the things that make this region special today — its world-famous wines, its delicious local cuisine, and its vibrant culture. From fresh market produce and artisanal cheeses to classic French dishes and desserts, I’ll show you why Bordeaux and its surroundings are a true foodie’s paradise.
Whether it’s wandering the charming streets of Bordeaux, discovering the nearby vineyards, or imagining life along the Atlantic coast, my goal is to spark your curiosity, keep you engaged, and help you see the region in a way that goes beyond the usual sights. If you leave inspired, smiling, and dreaming of your next visit, that is the best compliment I could ever receive.
I want you to feel comfortable, curious, and excited — like you’re exploring with a friend who loves sharing the secrets, flavors, and stories of this incredible region.
My tours are designed to leave you with memories, insights, and maybe even a craving to come back for more.
