About the Tour

Bologna has many names. It’s been called “the red city” for its red roofs and left-leaning politics, and ”the fat city” for its cuisine which is far from light and healthy. It’s known as “the towered” for the forest of over 100 towers that once dotted its landscape. It’s also been referred to as “the cultured” for having the world’s oldest university. On this walking tour, I’ll introduce you to each facet of the city and some of its secrets too, including how the rebellious Bolognese stopped the city from becoming the Vatican.

In Piazza del Nettuno, I’ll tell you how the Fountain of Neptune’s sculptor got away with making Neptune seem particularly well-endowed despite the church prohibiting it. While you stand in the Whispering Gallery under the Torre dell Arengo (Tower of Arengo), I’ll tell you how lovers were able to murmur sweet nothings to each other without their legitimate partners realising. I’ll reveal the legends linked to Le Tre Frecce (the Three Arrows) including one involving nudity. You’ll also get a glimpse of how Bologna once resembled Venice with its criss-cross of canals and rivers while passing Canale delle Moline and, while walking down Via Indipendenza, what things were like in the post-Risorgimento period.

Other highlights on this tour include:

  • Seeing San Petronio, the largest and most important church in the city
  • Strolling down Via Rizzoli, named after a 19th century physician who donated money to the city for a hospital
  • Hearing about the hero of two countries, Giuseppe Garibaldi
  • Passing Il Pincio, the entrance to Parco della Montagnola – a French style garden commissioned by Napoleon
  • Taking in Garisenda and Asinelli, Bologna’s Two Towers
  • Standing beside Porta Galliera where a retreating Austrian army left the city following a rebellion by the Bolognese in 1848
  • Learning about the city’s history from the Etruscans and the Lombards, including the chaotic factional fighting between the Guelphs and Ghibellines
  • Discovering the Quadrilatero neighbourhood with its cafes and restaurants
  • Finding out about the seven churches of Santo Stefano

We’ll explore the culinary wonders of the city too. It’s here that iconic dishes like lasagna, ragu and tagliatelle were born and it‘s here that their recipes are fiercely guarded in the chamber of commerce. We’ll explore the cafés, restaurants and shops where you can allow your tummy and taste buds to be tempted by these culinary marvels.

Join me on this walk through the pulsing heart of northern Italy, and discover the many faces of Bologna.

Tour Producer

A History of Italy is a weekly podcast in 15/20 minute episodes on the history of the Italian peninsula from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the present day.

There are plenty of dates, battles and rulers of course, but also a fair share of rabbits winning sieges, swords stuck in uncomfortable places, murder mysteries, naughty popes, monks getting undressed and all other sorts of mischief in the history of the colourful Italians.

It is the author's passion for that history and the fact he lives in Italy that has lead him to explore a country that has more UNESCO world heritage sites than any other in the world and has recently added the national cuisine as well.

The author, Mike Corradi is an Anglo-Italian English teacher living in northern Italy with a passion for travel and history. He has been workinh with VoiceMap since 2019 on more than 20 tours from the most iconic sites of Venice and Rome to the lesser known corners of the two as well as many other hidden gems of the Italian provinces for those who want a more unique and off the beaten track Italian experience.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Montagnola market, shops in via Indiopendenza, Archeological theatre in Piazza Maggiore, Quadrilatero food area, Palazzo Re Enzo

Best time of day

You can visit Bologna all year round, but you will be more comfortable from March to early June and from September to October to avoid the cold humid winter and the hot muggy summer of the Po Valley.

The tour is best taken during daytime hours if you wish to visit any of the locations along the way.

The city is quite crowded at the weekend, however the main shopping road (Via Indipendenza) is closed to traffic at the weekend and you can walk along it.

The Montagnola and piazza 8 Agosto market is on Fridays and Saturdays from early morning till around 6 pm.

The Bell Tower of San Pietro can be visited on Saturdays from 14:00 to 16:30 and from 19:00 - 23:00 in the summer. Call for info: 051 222112

Precautions

Although much of the tour can be done in the shade, especially in the summer months, it might be worth making sure you have plenty of sun block. Also make sure that you have plenty of water, although you could always pick that up in a bar along the way.

Bologna is quite a safe city with very little violent crime, however, as in all larger cities, you should be aware of your belongings at all times and make sure you keep any bags or backpacks safely closed.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
