What’s Occurin’? – A Gavin & Stacey Tour of Barry Island
About the Tour
Barry became a household name after the BBC’s beloved comedy series Gavin & Stacey thrust this classic Welsh seaside town into the limelight. On this walking tour, you’ll visit the actual filming locations where Stacey, Gavin and their friends and families’ most memorable moments unfolded. Along the way you’ll find out how this former coal port embraced its role as the home of one of Britain’s most-watched sitcoms.
The tour starts on Trinity Street, where you’ll stand outside the real houses used for Stacey and Bryn’s homes. You’ll make your way downhill through Barry’s regenerated docklands area, and past locations that doubled as settings for Doctor Who and Torchwood episodes. As you walk, you’ll hear behind-the-scenes stories about how location manager Clive Evans chose Barry over other Welsh towns, learn what the homeowners experienced during filming, and discover how Ruth Jones and James Corden’s friendship at school in nearby Porthcawl led to this comedy phenomenon.
The tour ends at the iconic Dave’s Coaches bus stop, where Stacey and Nessa departed for London in the very first episode and where Bryn’s rape alarm memorably went off.
On this 90-minute tour, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Step inside Nessa’s Slots arcade and Marco’s café where Stacey worked, and pose for photos
- Find the crazy golf course where Dave worked and Bryn made his tearful confession
- Explore the waterfront esplanade where Nessa pedaled her rickshaw, and walk alongside the golden sandy beach where the families gathered for Neil the Baby’s first seaside trip
- Learn about Barry’s remarkable transformation from David Davies’ coal-exporting empire to today’s visitor destination
- Hear the legend of St. Baruc, the 700 AD monk whose name evolved into Barry
- Discover why almost 60% of Welsh viewers watched the 2024 Christmas finale
This tour captures the essence of what made Gavin & Stacey so special: the genuine warmth of Welsh community, the affection between its characters, and the real locations that brought it all to life. Tidy!
