Park Güell Tour: A Fun and Cultural Look into Gaudí’s World
About the Tour
Park Güell is an invitation into the fantastical world of Antoni Gaudí, and a prized example of Catalan Art Nouveau.
On this fun and cultural walking tour around the UNESCO World Heritage site, your guide Matt will reveal the secrets of a park that transcended its original purpose as a garden city – to become a work of art in its own right. Having lived in Barcelona since childhood, Matt is delighted to share his in-depth knowledge of the park, weaving together historical research and surprising anecdotes.
This circular tour starts and ends at Park Güell's Carrer d'Olot entrance. As you follow a carefully designed route, you’ll discover how a collaboration between wealthy industrialist Eusebi Güell and the genius architect Antoni Gaudí gave birth to this marvel, where nature and architecture blend in perfect harmony. I’ll also show you Park Güell’s complex network of religious, mythological, and naturalist symbols. From the viaducts that respect the original contours of the hill to the colorful mosaics that were created using the trencadís technique, every element reflects a deeply spiritual artistic vision.
During this immersive 1.5-hour exploration of Park Güell, you’ll have a chance to:
- Admire the famous wavy bench, an ergonomic masterpiece decorated by Josep Maria Jujol with fragments of ceramic
- Contemplate the meaning of the multicolored salamander on the monumental staircase, with its mythological, biblical, and Catalan references
- Discover the Hypostyle Room with its 86 Greek temple-inspired columns, some of which are hollow to collect rainwater for irrigating the park
- See how Gaudí’s architectural choices preserved a centuries-old tree, out of respect for nature
- Visit the Gaudí House Museum, where the architect lived for nearly 20 years before moving to his workshop at the Sagrada Família
- Climb the Hill of the Three Crosses, the park’s highest point, where a monumental chapel was once planned but later replaced by a symbolic cavalry
- Appreciate mushroom-shaped chimneys, mosaic-covered roofs, and other unusual details on the charming entrance pavilions
- Understand the reasons behind the commercial failure of the original garden city project that was intended for Barcelona’s elite
Between touches of humor and moments of contemplation, this tour will give you a sense of how Gaudí’s genius transformed a simple hill into a magical space where imagination meets spirituality.
