Flowers, Feasts, and Fabrics: A Tour of Denpasar’s Pulsating Markets
About the Tour
Denpasar’s market area is a melting pot where you’ll find bright flowers and bold spices sold alongside jewelry and fishtack. On this walking tour, you’ll join the Balinese going about their daily lives and discover tidbits about their culture within this pulsating neighborhood.
The tour starts amidst the hustle and bustle of Pasar Bunga Wangaya’s vibrant flower market, filled with wholesale blooms destined for daily offerings to the gods. I’ll tell you about those offerings as you venture into Jalan Sulawesi, a street renowned for its array of fabrics, gold shops, and an Indian incense emporium. After taking it all in, you’ll weave your way back to the ever-fragrant Pasar Badung Spice Market and its myriad of buzzing stalls.
You’ll pay homage to the goddess of the market, Dewi Melanting, as you retrace your steps onto the main road where you’ll be captivated by the rich history of Pura Desa Lan Puseh Temple. Continuing along Jalan Gada Maja, you’ll glimpse into an ancient pharmacy and an array of other shops, including an old antique store, before concluding your tour at Bhineka Djaja Kopi Bali, Bali’s oldest and original coffee shop.
On this 90-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Learn why the colors of the flowers used in daily offerings are significant
- Hear the story behind the descendants of the fabric shop owners, and how they acquired their stores
- Find out why gold is so important to the Balinese
- Enter the fragrant world of incense in the store owned by Sathya Sai Baba, a world-renowned Indian Guru
- Be surrounded by ten thousand beautiful silk scarves and sarongs
- Engulf your senses in the spices and aromas of a Balinese Food Market

Bali Walking Tours
Bali Walking Tours is a collaborative team creating immersive self-guided audio walking tours across Bali’s most culturally rich and historic locations — including Ubud’s royal palaces and markets, the Campuhan Ridge walk, the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, Ulun Danu Temple on Lake Beratan, Denpasar’s traditional trading streets and the back lanes of Seminyak.
Our goal is to have our walkers understand why temples are oriented a certain way, how rice irrigation sustains communities, how ceremonies shape daily life, and how history still echoes through modern Bali. And along the way, we promise a few surprises, small detours and stories you won’t find on a signboard.
Developed by long term Bali residents and locals with years of on-the-ground exploration and research, these tours are built from meaningful conversations with local families, temple custodians, artisans, traders and community leaders. Each walking tour is carefully structured to combine history, religion, architecture, art, food culture and everyday Balinese life — giving independent travellers deeper understanding as they explore at their own pace. We believe learning about Bali should be as enjoyable as the walk itself
At the heart of our storytelling is Ibu Febri Paramedi, narrator, street photographer and blogger. Born into a mixed Balinese family and educated overseas, Febri lives between two worlds. Her deep connection to Balinese customs, ceremonies and heritage allows her to share stories with authenticity, while her international perspective helps translate complex traditions into engaging and accessible insight for visitors.
Our historian and researcher, Putu Sudiana, is an authorised licensed tour guide holding official DPD HPI Bali credentials and the KTPP Tour Guide Card. With more than 20 years of professional guiding experience, Putu brings expert knowledge of Balinese history, temple architecture, religious philosophy and local wisdom. He works closely with cultural advisors and community members to ensure every tour is respectful, accurate and rooted in genuine local perspective.
Amalia Merinda, our location scout and community liaison, carefully maps each walking route, interviews shop owners and uncovers the human stories behind the scenery — from incense traders rebuilding after floods to multi-generational artisans preserving traditional crafts.
With multiple published tours on VoiceMap, Bali Walking Tours is dedicated to thoughtful cultural storytelling that helps visitors look beyond the surface and connect more deeply with the island’s history, spirituality and living traditions.

Best time of day
The flower market is located on Jalan Kartini - and trades all day, but stalls come and go depending on the flower availability , time of year - or rain - at major Hindu celebrations there will be hundreds of sellers. Some days there are many, others less. Some stay and trade to around 7.00 pm. Best time to visit is from 9.00 am when sellers still have stock. - but theres always plenty to see -
So start at the flower markets by 9.00 am and then by the time the walk arrives at the cross over road into Jalan Sulewesi the fabric shops are opening
Usually the fabric markets open anytime from 9.00/10.00 am and close around 4.00/4.30 pm so its best to experience the whole area and take the morning walk, any day from Monday to Friday. Saturday's many close and Sunday most are closed
The coffee shop is usually closed by around 4.00 pm or so. but sometimes closes by 12 noon/1pm on Saturday.,and is not open Sundays. But again they make their own hours.
The main Pasar Badung market trades all day - busiest times early morning until about 11 am and then there's changes of stalls and crowds reduce and appear again by 3 pm when the market trades until late into the night.
However please be mindful that many traders make their own hours and close for Hindu Ceremomies, religious Muslim holidays, families, sickness or for other reasons - so some areas or shops maybe closed, and we apologise in advance, but have no control over this aspect. The walk will still be amazing and allows a full experience.
Precautions
There appears to be some renovations in Jalan Sulawesi and some shops can be blocked off which will mean you will have to step onto the road to avoid the building works, then make your way back onto the footpath when it safe to do so, to continue the walk.
Be aware of some sections of the footpath in Jalan Sulawesi are very uneven and have steps up and down between shops, so watch where you are walking. Stop if you would like to look at a fabric, otherwise be mindful of the steps and stairs along the footpath. Traders make their own front entrances and have no regard for creating easy walking from one shop to the next.
Also watch for items on the footpaths or aisles where the vendors often spill out onto the surrounding areas.
As bali is always always hot, sunscreen sunhat or cap with light respectful clothing is essential. An umbrella as shelter from the sun and rain, and a good pair of walking shoes. The fabric markets and Spice Markets are undercover so offer some protection from the sun, but it can be very humid.
A hand towel or small wet washer can be very helpful and a bottle of water is always a good idea but can be bought or refilled along the way from many vendors.
