About the Tour

It‘s easy to see what attracts visitors to Bali‘s famous Jatiluwih Rice Terraces. The picturesque green fields and the Subak system that irrigates them were listed as a cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 2012. On this walking tour around the fields, you‘ll discover that there‘s more to this spectacular, must-see destination than meets the eye. As you wind your way through the lush green fields, I‘ll tell you about the area‘s rich history and traditional beliefs, and the local harvesting methods.

After purchasing a ticket at the Jatiluwih Tourist Information hut, our tour will follow parts of the Blue and Red routes along the terraces. As you make your way to the Bedugul Temple, dedicated to the complex and community-led Subak system, you‘ll hear about the different types of rice and learn about the cycles of rice cultivation. Along the way, you‘ll catch sight of workers, their hands submerged in water as they nurture the rice, engaged in the rhythms of planting, growing, and harvesting – a cycle that‘s both backbreaking and unending. I‘ll show you the different cash crops that grow along the winding rice terrace paths like cocoa, coconut, and banana trees, and I‘ll tell you about the wildlife you might spot between the crops. You‘ll hear about Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice and fertility, and see statues dedicated to her dotted around the field.

On this tour, you‘ll have a chance to:

  • Find out which gods are worshipped here and why
  • Learn about the ancient calendars that dictate when rice is planted and in which direction
  • Spot statues of a humble rice farmer and his wife with an offering basket on her head
  • See the famous Jatiluwih coloured rice and learn how these strains are nurtured and grown
  • Hear villagers’ stories and learn about their connections to this stunning landscape
  • Discover whether rice farming is a dying tradition
  • Take in the beautiful Jatiluwih landscape and find out the origins of the name

This is more than a fascinating walk through the most stunning scenery that Bali has to offer. You’ll also gain insight into Jatiluwih’s connection to the essence of Balinese life, where nature and labor are intertwined in a dance that sustains generations.

Tour Producer

Bali Walking Tours is a collaborative team creating immersive self-guided audio walking tours across Bali’s most culturally rich and historic locations — including Ubud’s royal palaces and markets, the Campuhan Ridge walk, the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, Ulun Danu Temple on Lake Beratan, Denpasar’s traditional trading streets and the back lanes of Seminyak.

Our goal is to have our walkers understand why temples are oriented a certain way, how rice irrigation sustains communities, how ceremonies shape daily life, and how history still echoes through modern Bali. And along the way, we promise a few surprises, small detours and stories you won’t find on a signboard.

Developed by long term Bali residents and locals with years of on-the-ground exploration and research, these tours are built from meaningful conversations with local families, temple custodians, artisans, traders and community leaders. Each walking tour is carefully structured to combine history, religion, architecture, art, food culture and everyday Balinese life — giving independent travellers deeper understanding as they explore at their own pace. We believe learning about Bali should be as enjoyable as the walk itself

At the heart of our storytelling is Ibu Febri Paramedi, narrator, street photographer and blogger. Born into a mixed Balinese family and educated overseas, Febri lives between two worlds. Her deep connection to Balinese customs, ceremonies and heritage allows her to share stories with authenticity, while her international perspective helps translate complex traditions into engaging and accessible insight for visitors.

Our historian and researcher, Putu Sudiana, is an authorised licensed tour guide holding official DPD HPI Bali credentials and the KTPP Tour Guide Card. With more than 20 years of professional guiding experience, Putu brings expert knowledge of Balinese history, temple architecture, religious philosophy and local wisdom. He works closely with cultural advisors and community members to ensure every tour is respectful, accurate and rooted in genuine local perspective.

Amalia Merinda, our location scout and community liaison, carefully maps each walking route, interviews shop owners and uncovers the human stories behind the scenery — from incense traders rebuilding after floods to multi-generational artisans preserving traditional crafts.

With multiple published tours on VoiceMap, Bali Walking Tours is dedicated to thoughtful cultural storytelling that helps visitors look beyond the surface and connect more deeply with the island’s history, spirituality and living traditions.

Jatiluwih, Village, Tabanan, Or you may also have bought a ticket on the road leading into the Ricefields, which is 40,000 rp about $3.50US or $4.00 Aust. This ticket can be shown at the Main Kiosk., with no need to pay again.
Park your transport opposite the Kiosk for a small fee of 5000 Rp

There are five tracks through the fields and our tour takes a combination of the main pathway and the Red Track which is has all the main highlights

We walk down to one of the main Subak Temples, then retrace our steps back to the Red Route, turn at the small shop trek downwards along the path right into the very heart of the rice field for a fully immersive experience. Tips

Places to stop along the way

Our walk takes us past Cafe Rustic which is not very far down the path from the entrance, and we often stop and sip coffee and eat pisang goreng (sweet fried bananas) with golden syrup, whilst gazing over the rolling terraces. There are also several small kiosks in the fields where the various varieties of rice grown can be purchased. They also have soft drinks and water if you need to top up and some novelty farmers hats.

Best time of day

Visit anytime as there is always a crop in progress, and even if there is no rice, its a stunning sight to witness the layered terraces, and the farmers getting the fields ready for replanting. Between February to April, the rice stalks are starting to grow and you will be able to witness the green-yellow carpets of rice . During June – July (called Sasih Sada), you will be able to see farmers harvesting their crops on site. Crops are rotated throughout the year to allow the huge task of harvesting.

Best times to visit for stunning sunrise photos is early morning with the light glowing golden over the fields and haze of the mountains in the distance. Later in the afternoons the clouds may cover the mountains especially during the wet season, and it is cooler. The green of the fields is quite dazzling and gives a new meaning to the word green. The rice terraces face east so mornings the light is softer. But we often visit just after lunch and we like this time too. During summer it can be very humid and hot so once down into the rice fields take water, a hat or umbrella and make sure to cover yourself with insect repellant.

Precautions

This walk takes an easier route, as there are five different paths colour coded. We first follow the main pathway down to the viewing platform and then walk down to see a classic Subak Temple. We retrace our steps back to pick up the Red Track for an indepth fully immersive walk

Make sure you have sensible shoes, sunblock, insect repellant and a bottle of water. Although there are restaurants along the tracks, its still thirsty weather once you're down in the humidity of the rice fields. Some tracks can be quite tricky.

Our Red Track has the option to finish the walk at the small shop and turn back on the flat path. If you choose to turn back at the Warung then there's the option to listen to the remainder of the tracks virtually back in the comfort of your accommodation.

Or you may continue down the Red Track and then wind your way through the rice fields right back up to the road. This route follows along a small track and there are several series of steps back up to the road (what goes down must come back up!!) which maybe a challenge for some, but its quite feasible if you take it slowly.

If you choose to continue and are up for the adventure you'll be at one with the farmer who treads these tracks daily to tend and check on rice. There's a small stream, a bridge, a close up encounter with sapi (cows) and a totally immersive experience right in the terraces until you climb the final set of steps back up to the road. Its a thrilling reminder of the hard work and skill of the farmers and awesome beauty surrounding them daily.
