Door County’s Northern Peninsula: Blooming Orchards and Shining Bays
About the Tour
Door County’s northern peninsula is a blend of small coastal villages, quirky oddities, and natural beauty. This driving tour takes you through the county’s most scenic landscapes, from Bailey’s Harbor on Lake Michigan to Fish Creek on Green Bay, while you listen to fascinating stories along the way.
The tour starts at Anclam Town Park in Bailey’s Harbor. I’ll show you the area where Door County’s settlement began, when Captain Justice Bailey sought shelter from a storm in 1848. As you drive along the peninsula, you’ll travel through historic fishing villages, visit scenic overlooks perched high above the water, and learn about the cherry orchards and maritime traditions that have shaped this region’s unique identity.
Once you’ve completed a loop of the northern thumb, including stops at Sister Bay, Ellison Bay, and Fish Creek, the tour ends at Wood Orchard Market near Egg Harbor. Along the way, you’ll discover the perfect mix of natural beauty and local culture, and hear some of the stories behind this “Cape Cod of the Midwest.“
Along this 3-hour tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- See the historic Baileys Harbor Range Lights, part of an ingenious navigation system that safely guided ships into harbor for over a century
- Learn about the “Death’s Door“ passage that gave the county its name, where treacherous waters have claimed over 200 shipwrecks
- Drive the famous Jens Jensen Curvy Road, intentionally designed to slow travelers down so they can appreciate the scenery
- Explore Anderson Dock in Ephraim, where sailors have painted their boat names on the historic warehouse for generations
- Visit the scenic Ellison Bluff County Park with its dramatic catwalk that extends over limestone cliffs above Green Bay
- Discover Toft Point’s conservation story, where local Emma Toft famously stood her ground against developers to preserve Door County’s natural beauty
- See the famous goats grazing on the sod roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant (yes, really), an iconic Door County landmark since 1973
You’ll explore at your own pace with the flexibility to stop wherever interests you most, while the guide in your ear shares local insights and stories that bring Door County’s rich history to life.

David Phillips
Hi, my name is Dave and I am so excited to show you around Door County. When I first visited this area, I didn't really know what to do or where to go so I hope you'll give me an opportunity to share everything that I now know about this amazing county.
I am just a normal person who teaches business and computer subjects at one of the local high schools and I also run a local tour company called Door County Day Trips. I am married to my wife Amy and we have lived in Door County for 20 years, raising our kids, going to school, working, and learning about everything we didn't see when we first visited the area before we were married oh so long ago.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins in Bailey's Harbor just off of Highway 57 on the south edge of town at the Anclam town park. The park is located just after the corner on the right if your heading north on highway 57, and just past the BP gas station on the left if your traveling south through Bailey's Harbor.
The park has a hidden driveway but you'll know you are in the right spot when you see the round about and the long walkway that stretches into the harbor for a wonderful view of Lake Michigan.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Since northern Door County has no franchise restaurants, you might be waiting quite a while if your waiting for a fast food place to stop at for lunch. Feel confident that most pubs in Door County offer good food and service. Along this route, places for a good quick meal include the Cornerstone in Bailey's Harbor, Husby's Bar, The Culinaria Delicatessen or Piggly Wiggly Deli in Sister Bay, and the Bayside Tavern in Fish Creek.
Best time of day
The best time for this tour would be during the day light hours in the spring, summer, or fall, but it can also be enjoyed during the winter or about anytime of the year. Weekends can be quite busy and sometimes special events can also be an issue so a weekday might have lighter traffic and less obstructions but it shouldn't matter a great deal either way.
Precautions
Due to Door County having a large number of tourists during the summer, please be extra careful when pulling through the small towns. Pedestrians often feel very safe to cross wherever they like and don't always cross at corners or marked walks. Be sure to also take a jacket with you, the weather can change very quickly in Door County and the wind can make an otherwise warm day unbearable close to the water. A rain coat or umbrella is also not a bad idea, nor is filling your gas tank when you see a gas station because unless you know where they are, you can go several miles without seeing one.
