The Rise and Fall of Ancient Athens with Tristan Hughes
About the Tour
Athens built its identity on a mix of myth and hard-won power, from a legendary hero to the world's first democracy. On this walking tour, you'll follow Athens' transformation from scattered villages into a democratic superpower. You'll also hear how that power collapsed under Spartan sieges, Macedonian kings, and Roman conquest.
The tour starts at the modern statue of Theseus near the Ancient Agora, where mythology and history first intertwine. From there, you'll walk through the Agora's ruins, once Athens's busiest marketplace, and climb through pine-covered hills to the Pnyx, birthplace of Athenian democracy. Along the way, you'll pass the ancient Sanctuary of Zeus and climb past the National Observatory of Athens, perched where astronomers once tracked the solstice.
You'll pass the tomb of Philopappos, a Roman prince buried facing the Acropolis, and the cave-like Prison of Socrates, where Nazi-era looted treasures were once hidden. Further on, you'll stand where the Apostle Paul preached on the Areopagus, and walk through the Roman Agora's Tower of the Winds. The tour ends at Hadrian's Library, a vast complex of scrolls, gardens, and porticoes built under Roman rule.
On this 90-minute walking tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Explore the Sanctuary of Pan, a sacred cave linked to the god credited with panicking Persian troops at Marathon
- Visit the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman theatre built as a grieving husband's memorial to his wife
- See the tiny Sanctuary of the Nymphe, where Athenians once dedicated wedding vases to celebrate marriage
- Learn how the Themistoclean Wall was hastily rebuilt from looted gravestones to defy Spartan demands
- Stand at the rock-cut tomb linked to Cimon the Elder, an Olympic champion murdered for his fame
- Hear how Athens narrowly reversed a brutal vote condemning the rebellious city of Mytilene to destruction
By the time you reach Hadrian's Library, you'll understand exactly how Athens turned military defeat into enduring cultural power.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts just outside Thiseio metro station, so the easiest way to get there is by metro. The area around the station has shops, coffee shops and toilets, which makes it a good place to stock up before you set off.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are several kiosks along the route where you can buy drinks and snacks. Up on the hills there are fewer coffee shops and toilets, but you'll find public toilets near some of the main landmarks, such as the Acropolis and Apostolou Pavlou. The tour ends near Monastiraki metro station and Monastiraki Square, which has plenty of shops, coffee shops, snacks, souvenirs and toilets.
Best time of day
Sunset is the best time to do this tour, when you can enjoy views over the Acropolis, the Aegean and the city of Athens. Mornings can get crowded at some stops, like the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and around the Acropolis, especially during tourist season.
Precautions
This route has hills, stairs and steep climbs, and it isn't wheelchair accessible. Some of the hilly sections and paved steps can be slippery, especially when wet, so wear comfortable shoes with good grip. Bring your own water, especially in summer. The only major road crossing is the zebra crossing between Apostolou Pavlou and Dionysiou Areopagitou, so take care there.
