Athens Below the Surface: A Walking Tour of the Podoniftis Stream
About the Tour
Long before Athens expanded, the Attic landscape was crossed by countless streams and waterways. One of the last surviving traces of that landscape is the Podoniftis stream, which once flowed through a landscape of orchards, gardens, and cypress trees north of the city. On this walking tour through the Patisia and Nea Filadelfeia neighbourhoods, you'll discover hidden layers of that older Athens. You'll also hear how refugee communities, a legendary cave taverna, and a deadly 1994 flood all shaped the stream's story.
The tour starts at the church of Agia Varvara outside Ano Patisia Metro Station. You'll cross under the Metro Line 1 railway bridge – once a crossing controlled by a literal chain lowered across the road for passing trains – before the stream first comes into view through the trees along Chalkidos Street. Walking along Perissou Street, you'll get your first close look at Podoniftis, its banks dense with eucalyptus, fig trees, and reeds, with water birds and even herons hunting in the shallows.
Further along, the tour descends toward a terrace overlooking a deep ravine where a priest named Papalefteris once lived beside the water in a cave-like shelter, later the site of a legendary riverside taverna called Spilia. You'll also pass a stark concrete flood-control channel built after the catastrophic 1994 flood that killed 17 people, and learn how that disaster triggered a landmark legal decision halting further canalization of the stream. The tour ends at a small park near Papanastasiou Street, from where Perissos Metro Station is a short walk away.
On this 75-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Hear stories of 19th-century Athenians who came to Paradisia – this area's former name – for picnics and fresh water
- Spot fish, frogs, and herons along one of Athens' few remaining urban stream ecosystems
- Cross a pedestrian bridge with views of Podoniftis flowing through dense riverside vegetation
- Learn how the street names nearby – Smyrnis, Kordeliou, Ionias – preserve the memory of Greek communities expelled from Asia Minor in 1922
- Visit the church of Agia Efimia, built by refugee families as a place of memory and belonging
- See where Greece's Council of State blocked plans to turn Podoniftis into a concrete stormwater channel
This tour reveals an Athens most visitors never see – and many locals have forgotten.

Georges Xyftilis
I am a Swedish-Greek journalist, translator and founder of Greek Expedition, a multimedia platform dedicated to exploring Greece beyond the familiar landmarks. For many years, I have researched and documented the country's history, archaeology, culture, language and natural landscapes through articles, photography, guided walks and digital projects.
My work focuses on places and stories that rarely appear in traditional guidebooks, from hidden urban waterways and forgotten neighbourhoods to ancient sanctuaries, remote islands and local traditions. I combine historical research with firsthand exploration, spending countless hours walking, photographing and documenting the places I write about.
Greek Expedition was created to present a broader and more nuanced view of Greece, one that extends beyond the country's most famous monuments and destinations. Through my VoiceMap tours, articles and other publications, I aim to place each location in its historical, cultural and geographical context, allowing visitors to understand not only what they are seeing, but also how each place has evolved over time and why it remains significant today.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are plenty of cafés, bars, and restaurants near the start of the tour in Ano Patisia and at the end in Nea Filadelfeia. Opportunities to stop for refreshments are limited along the riverside sections of the route.
Best time of day
This tour can be enjoyed year-round during daylight hours.
Precautions
This is an urban walking tour, but parts of the route follow uneven riverside paths and gentle slopes. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Avoid the tour during or immediately after heavy rainfall, as the stream can rise rapidly and some sections may become muddy or temporarily unsafe. The route is not recommended for very young children. Be sure to bring plenty of water, especially during the summer months.
