About the Tour

Creativity and natural splendor have converged in Ashland, Oregon to create a town unlike any other. On this walking tour, you’ll discover the cultural heartbeat of this charming community. You’ll wander through its historic downtown, and experience the theatrical legacy that’s made this small town internationally renowned. From hidden creekside walkways to world-class theater venues, you’ll explore the unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness that defines Ashland.

The tour starts at the Ashland Plaza flagpole, the historic heart of the town since 1855. You’ll enter the enchanting Lithia Park – designed by the same landscape architect who created San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park – and find joy in “getting lost” in its winding trails and canopy of trees.

You’ll stroll along the charming Calle Guanajuato, a hidden walkway running alongside the creek that honors the town’s sister city relationship with Guanajuato, Mexico. The tour continues up Main Street, past unique local shops and historic buildings, and ends near the OSF courtyard, home to the beloved Green Show pre-performance tradition.

On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Taste the famous (and notorious) Lithia mineral water, a quirky Ashland tradition since 1927
  • Appreciate landmarks like the serene Japanese Garden
  • Follow the bubbling sounds of Ashland Creek, and step off the path to find a quiet spot on the bank – and maybe dip your toes into the cool, mountain-fed water
  • Visit the elegant Butler-Perozzi Fountain, crafted in Florence, Italy and brought to Ashland in 1916
  • Marvel at the stunning 110-foot tower of the historic Ashland Springs Hotel, built in 1925
  • Experience the Allen Elizabethan Theatre, modeled after London’s Fortune Theatre from 1599
  • Learn how the Chautauqua movement of the 1890s evolved into today’s renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival
  • Admire the striking Velocity sculpture that guides visitors through the Theater Corridor

Whether you’re a theater enthusiast, nature lover, or simply curious about this unique town’s story, this tour offers an insider’s perspective on what makes Ashland truly special. Come discover why visitors have been returning to this magical place for generations.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Lithia Park’s Ponds & Quiet Spaces: As we make our way through the park, you’ll pass the upper and lower duck ponds and countless secluded benches tucked away under the canopy. We highly recommend taking advantage of these quiet corners to sit, read, or just watch the water.

Japanese Garden: Also located within Lithia Park, this is a perfect spot for a peaceful pause. It offers a moment of Zen before continuing your walk along the creek.

Mix Bakeshop Situated on the Plaza: this is a local favorite for excellent coffee, artisanal pastries, and ice cream. It’s a great place to grab a treat before you head into the park or to refuel after your walk.

Paddington Station: An Ashland icon, this multi-floor store is filled with unique gifts, books, and kitchenware. It’s a must-visit for shoppers and is located right along our route.

Downtown Dining & Shopping: The tour guides you past dozens of other wonderful local boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. Whether you are looking for a sit-down meal, a quick bite, or a unique souvenir, you will find plenty of options just steps away from the tour path.

Take Your Time: While the walking time is about an hour, this tour can easily fill an entire day if you choose to linger by the ponds, enjoy a long lunch, or explore every shop. We encourage you to hit pause and enjoy the locations at your own pace!
