About the Tour

Beyond Arrowtown’s idyllic setting along the Arrow River, there’s a complex story of hardship and transformation.

On this walking tour, you’ll find out how a quiet pastoral valley became one of the richest goldfields in the world, where a diverse community took root.

As you explore the historic main street, secluded pathways, and the remarkable Chinese Settlement, you’ll detect echoes of its dramatic past. You’ll also meet the characters that shaped this unique Central Otago town.

The tour begins at the striking ’X Marks the Spot’ sculpture, where you’ll find out how it symbolically anchors Arrowtown’s gold-rush story. You’ll trace the early township layout, wandering streets lined with cottages from the 1800s, and stand where the first gold discoveries triggered a rush that reshaped the region almost overnight.

You’ll learn how mining transformed the landscape, why Arrowtown developed differently from other Otago settlements, and how the natural environment both supported and challenged the people who lived and worked here.

The walk ends in the heart of Buckingham Street, where boutique shops and heritage buildings now stand on the foundations of the town’s gold-rush heyday.

During this 90-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Explore the Arrow River, where gold discoveries in the 1860s transformed the region
  • Step inside the deeply moving Arrowtown Chinese Settlement, where restored and original miners’ huts tell the story of the prospectors who journeyed across the world, often facing prejudice and isolation
  • Hear the story of Ah Lum, the settlement’s best-known storekeeper, and a vital refuge for all miners
  • Listen to stories about floods, fires, and survival, and imagine how daily life unfolded in the small, stoic dwellings where miners lived
  • Walk along Buckingham Street, lined with some of the best-preserved heritage buildings in New Zealand

By the end of this tour, you’ll have a sense of how this landscape was reshaped by mining, settlement, and harsh seasonal conditions, and what life was like for the mining community that travelled across the world seeking opportunity.

Tour Producer

Kia ora, I’m Virginia Driver — the creator behind Southern Compass and the voice guiding you through these immersive audio tours of New Zealand’s South Island.

After travelling extensively overseas, I chose to make my home in Ōtepoti/Dunedin, drawn by its dramatic landscapes, layered history, and strong sense of place. That connection to the South Island shapes every tour I create.

My work focuses on helping independent travellers experience places more deeply. These tours go beyond navigation, blending local history, Māori heritage, wildlife knowledge, and lived experience to share the stories that give each location meaning. From rugged coastlines to remote roads, I aim to highlight both the well-known landmarks and the quieter details that are often missed when travelling at speed.

Each tour is carefully researched, scripted, and recorded by me, with routes tested on the road to ensure accurate timing and a smooth listening experience. My storytelling style is personal, informative, and grounded — designed to feel like travelling with a knowledgeable local who knows when to talk and when to let the landscape speak for itself.

These tours are an invitation to slow down, listen closely, and connect with the South Island in a way that’s thoughtful, engaging, and respectful of the places and stories you’re travelling through.

Continue along the path.

It is peaceful, isn't it? The only things you can really hear are the river and the wind in these trees, maybe a little bit of background noise from the town itself.

Now, I want you to use your imagination. Take a look at this avenue of trees... ...

The Gold Shop

Best time of day

You can do this tour any time of day or night but be aware some places may not be open if you are taking the tour out of hours.

Precautions

Please take care where you are walking. Initially the track along the river Tobins Track is a shared bike and walking track. Then we are on roads that intermittently have footpaths or no footpaths. If there are no footpaths you can walk on the road but watch for cars or walk on the grass verges. When you are encouraged to stop move over onto the grass verge. If you are crossing road look both ways and take care. There are no traffic lights or pedestrian crossings in Arrowtown but everyone drives slow.
