About the Tour

Downtown Ann Arbor is quirkier than your average midwestern college town. On this walking tour through the city center and the University of Michigan campus, you’ll hear the town’s wildest stories, from the Pearl Harbor submarine that made its way downtown, to the gambling ring run by the police chief. You’ll find out how this little city developed its unique character.

This circular tour starts and ends at the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library. From there, you’ll journey through the heart of the city to hear the true story of its two shady founders, and their wives, the “two Anns”. You’ll explore the famous Pretzel Bell building, a restaurant that was once the center of both celebration and a civil rights controversy. The tour weaves through the historic European-style pavilion, Nickels Arcade, and past the iconic Cube installation, twin to New York City’s famous sculpture.

From Native American heritage to 1970s streaking traditions, this tour strips away Ann Arbor’s polished veneer to reveal its fascinating underbelly.

Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Connect the dots between Ann Arbor and the founding of the Center for UFO Studies
  • Hear about stings and criminal enterprises while strolling past the Ann Arbor Police Department
  • Strut along the infamous Naked Mile and learn about its origins
  • Learn about the university’s role in the revolutionary “Earth Closet” (compost toilet) movement, which was eventually thwarted by flushing toilets
  • Find out about Jacob Slimmer, a cranky bouncer who once sparked the city’s biggest riot
  • Delve into the Legendary Weed Contest of 1975

This 60-minute walking tour brings together Ann Arbor’s most outrageous tales and hidden history. The area offers plenty of local coffee shops and restaurants for refreshments after the tour.

I have lived in Ann Arbor for more than a decade. In that time, I have gained a deep love for this beautiful little city, including its history and its people. I am a writer and researcher by profession and count myself lucky to be able to put these skills to use in curating fun, immersive walking tours. I have been running local tours for more than 5 years, and it has been such a joy to connect to travelers near and far through storytelling.

When I am not guiding visitors through the hidden gems and iconic landmarks of Ann Arbor, I enjoy spending time with my kids, embarking on ill-conceived home improvement projects, and reading.

I hope you join me on a journey through time, and discover the secrets and silly stories that make Ann Arbor a unique and fascinating place.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

You can pause this tour along the way to stop in at many of our wonderful local businesses. The campus portion of the tour will have you walk down State Street, one of the busiest thoroughfares downtown. There are many coffeeshops, book stores, and delicious restaurants along the way. The end of the tour is at the library, which is similarly, at the edge of Liberty St. This is what locals call the grown up part of town--the same dizzying range of restaurants, just 5 percent more expensive.

Best time of day

This tour can be done year-round. It is outdoors, so please prepare for the weather. If it is during business hours, you can pop into many spots along the way, including the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Michigan Union.

Precautions

Please wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat if it is sunny, and a warm coat if it is cold!
