About the Tour

Ålesund is a charming Art Nouveau town on Norway’s west coast. It was almost completely rebuilt after a great fire destroyed the town center in 1904. On this walking tour, you’ll hear about Ålesund’s history from the Viking Age, through World War II and modern times, while enjoying several beautiful views.

The tour starts in front of Destinasjon Ålesund & Sunnmøre, the tourist office, and takes you along Kongens Gate Road. You’ll see striking views of the tiny Molja Lighthouse, Mount Aksla, and the Ålesund strait, which prove why the town was voted the most beautiful in Norway. As you stroll, you’ll see that this relatively small town has many surprises, with flower motif ornamentation weaving around the walls, and trolls, dragons, and gremlins popping up in surprising places. You’ll see plenty of stone houses with towers, spires, and peculiar gables. I’ll also show you Ålesund Church and the cruise pier before you reach the end of the tour in Ålesund City Park.

You’ll also have a chance to:

  • Hear about local heroes from World War II, Malta Margit and Joachim Rønneberg
  • See the Rollo the Viking statue in Ålesund City Park and hear the tale of his international career
  • Find out where to find the best seafood and beer in town
  • Visit Parken Kulturhus, the town’s civic centre, and hear about the Waldehuset museum, the only wooden building in central Ålesund that survived the fire
  • Appreciate Ålesund Town Hall, one of Norway’s classic 1970s style office buildings, voted the second-ugliest building in the country
  • Find out why even a German Emperor was eager to visit Ålesund

By the end of this 75-minute tour, you’ll have a deeper appreciation for one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Norway, its rich history, architecture, way of life, and lesser-known stories.

I love travelling and discovering new places and I am happy to share this passion with fellow travellers that want the flexibility of an audio tour.
Walking around in Ålesund, Stavanger and Bergen is a special experience, there is always a lot to see and do. Feel free to join me for a walk or a hike, so I can show you some of my favourite places.
I hope you will enjoy the tours I have made for you, have fun!

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you would like to eat fish and chips you can visit Stuen AS (Tollbugata 1) or Jafs Brokiosken (Lorkenestorget). For seafood in general I recommend the fish market, Fisketorget Delikatesse AS (Keiser Wilhelms g. 25).
You can grab a nice coffee at Raccoon Coffee (Kongens gate 6) or if you prefer ice cream, Lamella (Løvenvoldgata 5) is a good choice.
For beer you can check out Molo Brew, situated conveniently near the cruise port (Keiser Wilhelms g. 2B).
If you walk up to Aksla viewpoint you can get refreshments at Fjellstua restaurant (Aksla, 6007 Ålesund), you can also take a sightseeing train or bus in the touristic season to get there.

Some of the museums worth visiting in the town center include Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE, Fiskerimuseet and the waterfront nearby and Ålesunds Museum just behind the fish market. Waldehuset, the only wooden building in central Ålesund that survived the fire is also a museum and café worth visiting.
If you travel a bit further from Ålesund center you can visit Atlanterhavsparken, the Ålesund Aquarium, and Giske and Borgund.

Best time of day

Any time during daylight hours. If you continue up to Aksla viewpoint, I recommend going up there before sunset.

Precautions

Be careful walking uphill or downhill and on cobble stones at certain points.
The route includes some stairs which can be avoided by taking a smaller detour, so it is possible to do it with wheelchair or stroller.
Some of the stops have benches nearby where it is possible to sit.

It is always good to have a rain jacket with you.
If it is winter time and the roads are icy, I recommend you wear spikes on your shoes.

App Store Review
“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
