The Rise and Fall of Akragas: Valley of the Temples Audio Tour
About the Tour
Agrigento's Valley of the Temples is one of the ancient world's most remarkable surviving landscapes. On this walking tour, you'll trace the rise and fall of Akragas, a city so powerful it once rivaled Athens, through nine temples still standing on the same ridge where Greek colonists built them 2,500 years ago.
The tour starts at the park entrance and follows the Sacred Way westward past almond groves and olive trees. You'll hear how Akragas grew from a small Greek colony founded around 580 BC into one of the wealthiest cities in the Mediterranean, how the Carthaginians nearly destroyed it in 406 BC, and how the Romans later rebuilt it. Along the way, you'll pass the early Christian necropolis carved into the ridge, and Villa Aurea, the estate of the English captain who financed 20th-century excavations here.
You'll learn why the Temple of Concordia survived virtually intact when others were dismantled for building materials – a bishop converted it into a church in 597 AD – and discover that its original gleaming white stucco blazed with blue and red painted detail. You'll also stand before the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, designed to be the largest Doric temple ever built, and see the recently re-erected Telamon, one of the colossal 8-metre stone figures that once supported it. The tour ends beside this giant at the Olympieion, offering a final sense of the staggering ambition that once defined this city.
On this 90-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Examine scorch marks on the Temple of Hera Lacinia, left by Carthaginian forces in 406 BC
- Spot fossilised shells embedded in the 2-million-year-old stone blocks of the Temple of Concordia
- Explore the optional Kolymbethra Garden, a restored 5-hectare citrus orchard fed by Greek-era underground aqueducts
- Discover how the Temple of the Dioscuri's iconic four columns are actually a Romantic-era reconstruction
- Visit the sanctuary of the chthonic deities, where circular and square altars hint at rituals tied to fertility and the underworld
- Learn how Goethe visited this valley in 1787 and called it a
splendid vision

Directions to Starting Point
This tour begins at the eastern entrance to the Valley of the Temples archaeological park in Agrigento, the entrance closest to the Temple of Juno.
The easiest way to get there is by taxi, car, or local bus from Agrigento city centre. If you are arriving by car, look for parking near the eastern entrance of the archaeological area before starting the tour.
Before pressing start, make sure you are at the eastern entrance to the site, with the ticket area nearby and the path leading into the archaeological park ahead of you. This is the side of the Valley from which you first walk toward the Temple of Juno, before continuing westward through the site.
The Valley of the Temples is divided into an eastern sector, with the temples of Juno, Concordia, and Hercules, and a western sector, with the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of the Dioscuri, and the Garden of Kolymbethra. Today, the two areas are connected inside the park by a bridge, so you will be able to continue through the site without leaving the archaeological area.
Electric shuttle services are available inside the park, and the site is equipped with accessibility features for visitors with reduced mobility.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Along the route, you may find a convenient refreshment stop inside the archaeological area, where you can take a short break for water or a drink. The Valley also offers several panoramic points that are worth lingering at, especially around the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Concordia, and the area of the Olympieion.
If you have time after the walk, the Archaeological Museum is one of the best complementary stops. It helps place the monuments in context and gives you the chance to see important finds from ancient Akragas, including the famous Telamon.
Another rewarding stop is the Garden of Kolymbethra, in the western sector of the site, where the archaeological landscape opens into a more intimate, cultivated Mediterranean garden.
And if you want to continue after the Valley, the historic centre of Agrigento is a wonderful next step, especially for a meal, a drink, or a slower walk through the city.
Best time of day
The best time to visit the Valley of the Temples is early in the morning, especially in summer, ideally from 8:30am onward, when the light is still soft and the heat is more manageable. Late afternoon can also be beautiful, especially for the changing light over the temples. Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for walking. In the hotter months, a good plan is to visit the Valley in the morning and then reserve the afternoon for the Archaeological Museum, which offers a complementary experience and helps deepen what you have seen on site. As opening times may vary by season, it is always worth checking the official park website before you go.
Precautions
This is an outdoor walking tour through a large archaeological site, so please wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially in warmer months. In summer, temperatures can become very high, especially around midday.
Restrooms and electric shuttle services are available within the site, and the archaeological area includes accessibility features for visitors with reduced mobility.
