Hope Town History: Legends, Landmarks and 250 Years of History
About the Tour
Hope Town’s pastel cottages and winding lanes tell a story that began nearly 250 years ago, with brave American Loyalists seeking refuge.
On this walking tour, you’ll discover how this Bahamian settlement was a sanctuary for those fleeing the American Revolution, and later became the vibrant community it is today. You’ll explore historic homes, centuries-old cemeteries, and learn how the controversial lighthouse that once threatened the town’s economy became its salvation.
The tour starts at the Post Office Dock, where mail and essential supplies once arrived monthly by ship. You’ll weave through narrow streets originally designed for donkey carts, passing charming colonial homes with their signature bright shutters. Along the way, you’ll hear tales of shipwreck salvagers, boat builders, and the resilient families who shaped this island’s unique character through generations of challenges and triumphs.
You’ll discover how the iconic candy-striped Elbow Reef Lighthouse – the last manual lighthouse in the Bahamas – was initially opposed by locals whose livelihoods depended on shipwrecks. You’ll also hear stories about economic transformation, from the collapse of the wrecking industry to the rise of tourism.
The tour ends at the Wyannie Malone Museum, housed in a historic building named after the pioneering woman who founded this settlement after fleeing Charleston during the American Revolution.
During this 60-minute tour, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Visit the Byrle Patterson Memorial Garden and learn about the Lucayan people who inhabited the island 600 years ago
- Explore the history of Hope Town Primary School, known as “The Beacon of Learning” since 1893
- Discover traditional Bahamian crafts including straw weaving and wooden boat building
- Learn how families survived through fishing, farming, and the salvaging of shipwrecked vessels, or “wrecking”
- See the site where the popular TV show Scrubs filmed its special Bahamas episodes
- Visit graveyards that tell tales of cholera outbreaks, maritime adventures, and generations of island families
- Learn how the lighthouse operates with its original Victorian-era clockwork mechanism
- Visit Hope Town’s oldest cemetery, perched dramatically above the sea where many early “wreckers” now rest
This self-guided walking tour allows you to explore at your own pace while discovering the authentic heart of one of the Bahamas’ most charming historic settlements.
