Joel Barrett is a Kansas City based entrepreneur, speaker, author, and storyteller who believes our stories carry power. As the founder of Joel Speaks Out and creator of the KC Rainbow Tour, Joel is dedicated to uncovering, preserving, and sharing the rich LGBTQ history woven throughout Kansas City’s neighborhoods.
What began as a self-guided audio driving tour has grown into a multi-format cultural experience that includes private charter bus tours, live guided experiences, with new walking and streetcar-based offerings in the works.
The KC Rainbow Tour was honored by the Mayor and City Council during LGBTQ History Month in recognition of its contribution to preserving and celebrating local history.
Joel’s work is rooted in archival research, oral histories, and collaboration with community members who lived these stories. The tour highlights early organizing efforts, beloved bars and gathering spaces, artists and activists, and the everyday people who built visibility and safe spaces in the face of resistance.
Through the KC Rainbow Tour, Joel invites you to see Kansas City differently. This is more than a tour. It is an immersive journey into resilience, creativity, courage, and community.
