Washington Monument
About
The Washington Monument spent nearly two decades as a stubby stump. Construction started in 1848, the money ran out, and there it sat, half-built on a muddy lot surrounded by slaughterhouses and storage sheds, while Congress declined to help. When work finally resumed, the builders couldn't source matching stone. Look carefully at the obelisk today and you'll still see the colour change about a third of the way up, a faint watermark of political indecision carved into 555 feet of marble.

Designed by Robert Mills, America's first native-born trained architect, the monument anchors Pierre L'Enfant's original plan for the capital. It also contains a small piece of the Parthenon, donated by the Greek government in the 1850s in admiration of Washington's ideals.

VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours use the monument to trace how Washington DC was literally built from a swamp, explaining how the National Mall's grand geometry was rescued from mosquito-infested marshland, and connecting the obelisk's rocky construction history to the city's broader story of vision, delay and eventual ambition.
